Man Merit awards President Justice Courts NOT Courts should not act as 'mere tape recorders', says SC; flags role of public prosecutors
Courts have to take a participatory role in a trial and not act as «mere tape recorders», the Supreme Court said here and lamented that there is «practically no effective and meaningful cross-examination» by public prosecutors of any hostile witness during hearings of criminal appeals. The apex court said a judge has to monitor the proceedings in aid of justice and, even if the prosecutor is remiss or lethargic in some ways, the court should control the proceedings effectively so that the truth is arrived at. Observing that relations between the public prosecution service and the judiciary are the very cornerstone of the criminal justice system, a bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said time and again, the top court has said that there should not be any element of political consideration in matters like appointment to post of public prosecutor etc. The observations by the bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, came in a judgement while upholding the conviction and life sentence awarded to a man for murdering his wife in 1995.

UPS Pool country International cricket Sporting Vanuatu, nation of just 3 lakh makes its presence felt in International cricket
Vanuatu. Let’s be honest and there’s no shame here: you did not even know that this was a country. It’s a string of islands east of the northern part of Australia in the Pacific and its last recorded population was 3.27 lakh people. Of these about 50% are ruled out from this story by virtue of being male. Of the 1.6 lakh remaining, you can leave out another half on the basis that they would be either too young or old to make a cricket team. And so, from a potential pool of 80,000 (a generous estimate because not everyone is interested in one sport), emerges a team that was in contention for a berth in a World Cup comprising 10 teams from across the globe.

UPS film Actor performer stage stars NOT Filmed theatre - to be or not to be? In this case, 'to be' is not in question
Filmed theatre — the recording and subsequent screening of a live stage production — isn't to many tastes. it usually has neither the immediacy of a good play nor the visual brio of a good film. I've been wary of the form ever since my school showed us an astonishingly dull 'film' of The Merchant of Venice, which felt like it was created by having a stationary camera placed in the first row at a theatre. And yet, I loved a recent screening of The Motive and the Cue, Jack Thorne's play about the inter-generational clashes between two major British actors, John Gielgud and Richard Burton, during a 1964 Hamlet production in which the former directed the latter. One reason for this is that I'm a Hamlet nut, and have some interest in the real-life figures depicted here (especially Gielgud, superbly played by Mark Gatiss, but also Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who were newly-weds at the time). To appreciate this play, you need that interest. But even otherwise, M&C didn't feel static.

UPS Target Election reports PM coming up with 'imaginary ideas' about Congress manifesto to attack party: Shashi Tharoor
Shashi Tharoor on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was coming up with imaginary ideas regarding the Congress' manifesto to attack the party. The situation today was such that «the very idea of Indian democracy that our forefathers fought for is in peril», he told reporters here. «Our manifesto is a strong document with a vision for the future. Modi is making up imaginary ideas that are not in our manifesto and attacking us for that. We too can come up with imaginary things about Modi but we are not doing that,» he said. «We believe Modi's own record is bad enough and there is enough to attack. He, however, has nothing to say against us except imaginary things which we have not claimed in our manifesto,» he added. The issue of Muslim reservation was brought up by the PM but there was no mention of the term «Muslim» in Congress' manifesto, Tharoor claimed. «He said we are going to snatch away the houses and buffaloes of people and give it to Muslims. There is no such reference in the manifesto. He says we are going to take away mangalsutras and gold and give it to Muslims,» he said.
