India rupee ends flat, ducks global pressures on likely cenbank help
rupee closed little changed on Wednesday, despite weakness in Asian peers, as the Reserve Bank of India likely sold dollars to prevent the rupee from falling to a fresh record low. The rupee closed at 83.22 against the U.S. dollar compared with a close of 83.23 in the previous session. Most Asian currencies weakened versus the greenback with the Thai baht leading losses with a 0.51% decline. Likely consistent dollar supply from India's central bank helped the rupee hold its ground, traders said. The RBI wasn't aggressively selling dollars but was seen offering the currency at 83.23-83.24 levels via state-run banks, a foreign exchange trader at a state-run bank said. The dollar index climbed to a fresh near 10-month high at 106.34 in Asia hours, amid prospects of higher-for-longer policy rates in the U.S. Brent crude oil futures rose over 1% to $94.94 per barrel. The rupee fell to a low of 83.24 on Wednesday.

Toyota plans third India plant, new SUV as domestic sales surge
Toyota Motor plans to build a third car plant in India, expanding production capacity in the country for the first time in over a decade as its partnership with Suzuki Motor boosts domestic volumes, two sources said. The world's biggest car maker wants the plant to start with capacity of 80,000-120,000 vehicles a year, which could grow to around 200,000 over time, said one of the people who has direct knowledge of the plans. The plant's proposed initial capacity would expand Toyota's existing manufacturing capacity in India by as much as 30% from 400,000 units currently. Toyota has also begun development of a new sport utility vehicle (SUV) for the Indian market that would be launched in early 2026 and be an anchor product for the new factory, said the person and a third source briefed on the company's plans. The sources declined to be identified as the automaker has not disclosed the expansion plans. A representative for Toyota's India unit declined to comment. Toyota's India sales have soared due to a global partnership with Suzuki under which the two Japanese car makers take some vehicles originally developed by their partner, then tweak and sell under their own brands to fill out their product line-up. Cars originally from Maruti Suzuki's stable such as the Glanza hatchback and Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV now account for 40% of Toyota's India sales. About two-thirds of Toyota's current production capacity is used by Maruti Suzuki to build vehicles for both car makers as part of their partnership. Toyota, known for its Fortuner SUV and Camry hybrid in India, told Reuters earlier in September it expects record domestic sales in 2023. The Japanese car maker is now aiming to have production capacity of 500,000

India will sell 50-year bonds for the first time on growing insurer demand
bonds for the first time, introducing ultra-long maturity debt to cater to the growing demand from insurance and pension funds. The new bond adds to the 30-year and 40-year tenor debt sold, extending the nation’s yield curve, according to a borrowing plan released by the Reserve Bank of India on Tuesday. The nation’s burgeoning life insurance and pension fund industries, driven by an expanding middle class, are changing the landscape for India’s $1 trillion sovereign debt market. The sale reflects their growing heft, and helps Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government reduce its reliance on purchases by banks to fund record borrowings. “Investor demand has been strong, supported by the expansion of the formal sector, with households allocating a higher share of financial savings in life insurance, pensions and provident funds,” Gaura Sen Gupta, economist at IDFC FIRST Bank wrote in a note. The authorities are trying to increase the tenure of debt sold and expect yields to decline after India’s inclusion in JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s emerging market index, a government official, who didn’t want to be named, told reporters. The government will sell 300 billion rupees ($3.6 billion) of the 50-year bond in the October to February period, which accounts for almost 5% of its total borrowings.
