China questions why US should get first shot to chair G-20 again
China has raised objections to the US hosting the Group of 20 nations in 2026 as already announced by President Joe Biden’s administration, according to four people familiar with the discussions.G-20 members rotate their presidency of the group, including the annual summit of world leaders, and the US has said it will take it on after India, Brazil and South Africa complete their respective yearlong stints. China’s objection — backed by Russia, according to one of the people — is mostly symbolic as it’s unlikely the decision will be reversed. The people asked not to be named since the discussions on the sidelines of the current G-20 in India are private. The Chinese move was first reported by the Financial Times. Beijing asked that its displeasure be recorded, according to the people, who didn’t know the reasons for China’s objections.

Who will save Europe’s economy?
Europe appears to be headed for a recession if it’s not there already, and matters are worse if you ask: Who will save it this time? Maybe Europe will have to fix itself. Previous dismal estimates for gross domestic product in the second quarter of the year were revised down to abysmal Thursday. The European Union had zero growth quarter-on-quarter, and 0.4% year-on-year.

China group slams India for stoking division at ‘sabotaged’ G-20
spy agency published a strong-worded criticism of India hours before Group of 20 leaders met in New Delhi, accusing the summit host of pushing its own agenda and causing disagreement. The commentary lamented that India held two prior G-20 sessions in disputed territories — one in Arunachal Pradesh that China also claims, and another in Kashmir, contested by Pakistan. The move has “sabotaged the atmosphere for cooperation at the G-20,” the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations said on its official WeChat account on Saturday. The post reveals a possible explanation for President Xi Jinping’s decision to stay away from the summit hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Foreign Ministry declined to explain the absence.

President Joe Biden wants to show the world at the Group of 20 summit in India and during a stop in Vietnam that the United States and its like-minded allies are better economic and security partners than China. White House officials said Biden, who departed Thursday evening for New Delhi, will use the annual G20 gathering as an opportunity for the U.S. to highlight a proposition for developing and middle-income countries that would increase the lending power of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund by some $200 billion.

India’s G20 presidency: Opportunity beckons
G20 meeting of world leaders in New Delhi over the next few days is likely to become an apogee for India’s foreign policy exertions, apart from providing an appropriate platform for the country to project its aspirations as an emerging global leader. Past top-level summits were never this comprehensive, nor attended by such a wide range of leadership.

China says it backs African Union's inclusion in G20
China on Thursday expressed its support for the inclusion of the African Union (AU) in the G20, saying it is the «first country to explicitly support» the inclusion of the African bloc in the grouping. In a recent interview with PTI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India backs the inclusion of the African Union as a full member of the Group of 20 largest economies as no plan for the future of the planet can be successful without the representation and recognition of all voices. «China is the first country to explicitly voice support for the AU's accession to G20,» Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a media briefing here while replying to a question about reports that AU will be admitted to G20 at the New Delhi summit to be held on September 9-10. «At the recent China-Africa leaders dialogue, President Xi Jinping once again stressed that China actively supports the full membership of AU in the G20,» said. Mao said China and AU are important partners in building high-level commentary with a shared future and safeguarding international equity and justice. «We support the AU in playing a bigger role in global governance,» she said. In the last few years, India has been positioning itself as a leading voice, flagging concerns, challenges and aspirations of the Global South or the developing nations, especially the African continent. Prime Minister Modi has been leading from the front on the issue of the African Union's membership of the G20.

China says 90 countries have confirmed attendance for Belt and Road Initiative
China said on Thursday that 90 countries have confirmed attendance for its Belt and Road Initiative conference being held in October, The third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) will be held in Beijing in October, the foreign ministry has previously said, with 2023 marking the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Several foreign leaders are expected to attend, including Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, state media reported. Russian President Vladimir Putin also has a scheduled visit to China in October when the country hosts the One Belt One Road forum, Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov said recently, according to Russia's state news agency TASS. «We have received an invitation and plan to go to China,» Ushakov said, according to a report from the Global Times. China's foreign ministry said the country has signed Belt and Road cooperation documents with more than 150 countries and over 30 international organizations, according to Xinhua. «Over the past decade, Belt and Road cooperation has achieved fruitful outcomes,» Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin recently said at a press conference, adding that it has established more than 3,000 cooperation projects and galvanized nearly $1 trillion of investment, state media reported. Critics see the ambitious Belt and Road initiative — billed as recreating the ancient Silk Road to boost global trade infrastructure — as a tool for President Xi Jinping's China to spread its geopolitical and economic influence. Debate in the West over economic dependence on China has cast a shadow over longer-term trade and investment relations with Beijing.

Here's why Chinese President Xi Jinping didn't attend G20 in India
Xi Jinping has decided not to attend the G20 summit scheduled to take place in New Delhi this week. This decision marks a departure from his consistent attendance at previous G20 meetings, raising questions about its underlying reasons. According to reports from Nikkei Asia, the root cause of this unexpected move can be traced back to the recent Beidaihe meeting in China, an annual gathering of incumbent and retired leaders of the Chinese Communist Party.
