Delhi mulls vertical forests, solar-powered EV charging infra to fight air pollution, climate change
solar-powered EV charging infrastructure and vertical forests are among the new ideas the Delhi government is contemplating to address the twin challenges of air pollution and climate change. The other innovative ideas include creating charging sites and battery-swapping stations by repurposing lamp posts, parking spots and petrol stations. Also, "smart poles" combining fast-charging functions, public Wi-Fi, and the internet of things could soon become a reality in Delhi, a government official said. These ideas were discussed at a meeting of Delhi's State-Level Steering Committee on Climate Change in June and are likely to be incorporated in the city government's new action plan on climate change. While climate change is exacerbating heatwaves and heavy rain events in the crowded and land-locked city, studies show that air pollution is shortening the lives of Delhi residents by 11.9 years.

Congress expresses concern over increasing terror strikes
Congress has expressed concern over the increasing terror strikes in J&K, especially in the Jammu region, causing both civilian and military casualty. Condemning the latest terrorist attack on the Army personnel in Kathua, the Opposition party said it is fully with the government for responding with effective action but also reminded the ruling establishment that merely making hollow speeches will not do. «This cowardly attack on our Army personnel is extremely condemnable. What is all the more a matter of concern is that this (Kathua incident) is the 5th attack in a month… As the Opposition, we want to draw your (government's) attention to these attacks. Whatever steps the government would take for the safety of the country, Congress is ready to extend support. These terrorists must be given a reply in their own language but at the same time, as Rahul Gandhi said the other day, the solution to these attacks is strict action, not hollow speeches,» said Congress spokesman Deepender Hooda on Tuesday. Speaking to media persons separately, AICC general secretary Sachin Pilot said: «The terrorist attacks are continuously increasing. In Parliament, the government claims the situation in J&K is normal. But if our soldiers are losing their lives in terrorist attacks, the government will have to give clarification.»

WestJet continues to feel the effects of a two-day plane mechanics strike that nearly shut down the airline’s network for 29 hours over the Canada Day long weekend and cost it millions of dollars. The work stoppage that began on June 28 forced the airline to cancel more than 1,050 flights during one of the busiest travel windows of the year.Fallout from the unexpected job action continued well into last week, as WestJet called off 244 trips Tuesday through Saturday as well as at least 32 more on Sunday, according to tracking service FlightAware. Figures from the airline suggest at least 170,000 passengers have been affected. The task of fully resuming flights by a nearly grounded fleet of 180 planes across more than 175 destinations is complex, costly and time-consuming.

Volvo to launch only EVs in India, plans one new car every year
Volvo Cars will launch only electric cars in India going forward and not sell petrol and diesel-powered vehicles in the market “beyond the 2030 deadline”, a top executive said. “The new products that we will bring to the market will be electric,” Martin Persson, head of Volvo Cars for the Asia Pacific (except China) region, told ET. “We still have the ICE (internal combustion engine) products and we think they are competitive for customers who want that. It is not about taking that away. But, at the same time, the future is pretty clear.” Globally, Volvo Cars plans to go all electric by the end of the decade.

Biden needs to buck up; donors set a two-week deadline to increase the approval ratings
US Democratic party are reported to have given a two-week grace period to Biden to improve his approval rating on the various national surveys. This comes in wake of what many are considering to be a disastrous performance by Biden in the last presidential debate. Many donors indicated that it will be tough for them to stomach Biden’s falling numbers and possible loss in the presidential election. Biden seem to be confident of his chances and has refused to step down from the contest against Trump. The donors have asked Biden to take action and fix the falling survey numbers, according to the New York Post.

Needed: A societal awakening to take on climate change
A Supreme Court ruling connected with the survival of the endangered Great Indian Bustard species on 6 April 2024 stated: “ … the people have a right against the adverse effects of climate change … this right and the right to a clean environment are two sides of the same coin.... The inability of underserved communities to adapt to climate change or cope with its effects violates the right to life as well as the right to equality… If climate change and environmental degradation lead to acute food and water shortages in a particular area, poorer communities will suffer more than richer ones." This game-changing jurisprudence, recognizing protection against the adverse impacts of climate change as worthy of being considered a fundamental human right, came days before a similar ruling by Europe’s top human rights court that the Swiss government had violated the human rights of its citizens by failing to do enough to combat climate change.

The age question looms over America’s bosses
It’s time to confront an urgent question: Am I the leader I used to be? The risk of avoiding this question is playing out in Washington right now. And while the fate of the free world might not rest on the answer for most of us, the futures of our companies and co-workers just might. If an honest assessment reveals a lost step, it might mean making small adjustments such as cutting back hours.

Dive into the Antarctic
Safari Stories' podcast, where Hadley Pierce and Jomi Krobb, co-founders of South Africa-based guided wildlife and conservation tours company Trunks and Tracks, share their wild tales. In the episode, Action of the Antarctic Peninsula, they plunge into those frigid waters and recount some epic sightings, including watching humpback whales feed, a large pod of killer whales bow- riding a ship, and leopard seals hunting penguins. In the 40-min podcast, Hadley's narration is so vivid that it makes us feel as if we are sitting in the boat, watching marine life unfold its minutest secrets. 'There is ice everywhere, lots and lots of icebergs, some of which are many times bigger than the ship… they are very impressive,' recounts Hadley.
