Action Election WhatsApp Justice Equality Courts Excise 'scam': Delhi HC to pronounce on Tuesday verdict on Kejriwal's plea challenging arrest
Delhi High Court is scheduled to deliver on Tuesday its verdict on a plea by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is in judicial custody in a money laundering case linked with the alleged excise scam, challenging his arrest. As per the cause list uploaded on the high court's website, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma will pronounce the order at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Besides his arrest, Kejriwal has also challenged his subsequent remand in the Enforcement Directorate's custody. He was later remanded in judicial custody and is currently lodged in Tihar jail. The AAP national convener has questioned the «timing» of his arrest by the agency and said it was in contravention of the basic structure of the Constitution, including democracy, free and fair elections and level playing field.

The United Residents Joint Action (URJA), in its citizens' charter for the next government, has made nine finance-related obligations, seven fundamental commitments, five leadership commitments and three citizen participation demands, the resident welfare associations (RWAs) group said in a statement. «The URJA's mandate calls for a more liveable, breathable, sustainable city with better solutions for its air pollution problems, civic issues and governance. The charter presents the key challenges faced by citizens of Delhi and their needs along with solutions that will work and specific demands for action,» it said.

Election Commission has suspended three Tripura government employees, including a security personnel, for participating in political events and election campaigns, violating the model code of conduct (MCC). An election official said that Partha Pratim Debroy, a government teacher, Rasu Chowdhury, an Education Department staff member, and a Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan named Kishan Debbarma were suspended by their authorities for participating in election campaigns and political events. Delhi lieutenant-governor on Monday red-flagged to the Ministry of Home Affairs the «lack of seriousness» and «insensitivity» of Delhi ministers towards people-centric governance issues. L-G VK Saxena shot off a letter to the home ministry pointing out that AAP ministers — Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot and Atishi — have been refusing to attend meetings called by him on issues relating to health infrastructure and summer action plan. According to L-G Secretariat sources, Saxena had sought meetings with the ministers twice on March 29 and April 2. «An intimation was accordingly sent to Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Atishi Marlena and Saurabh Bharadwaj for a meeting by the Lt Governor on 02.04.2024. However, all the ministers have vide emails declined to attend the said meeting on the specious ground that since the model code of conduct is in force, such a meeting would not be appropriate at this stage,» the letter says adding, «Hon'ble Lt Governor believes that a consultation of this nature was warranted so that routine works of governance are not hampered, in the backdrop of the arrest and detention of the chief minister.»

The LG Secretariat, in a letter to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), said the Delhi ministers refused to attend a meeting called by Saxena to discuss the functioning of their ministries following the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with a money-laundering case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy and is now lodged in Tihar jail here.
