Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, several strategic adjustments are on the agenda. The series, which has so far been marked by tight contests, will see the teams clash again on August 7 for the final ODI. The focus will be on India's approach to countering a sluggish pitch and Sri Lanka's arsenal of spin bowlers, who proved effective in the first ODI. For India, this means finding ways to counteract the spin bowlers and establishing solid batting partnerships. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will look to build on their successful strategy and adjust to the absence of a key player. Enterprise Trade War Relationships Arsenal US-led old order weakens under weight of CRIK's influence
China's challenge to American primacy, it's believed, will be the defining contest of the century. While this may be true, a far more dangerous contest is afoot between what seems to be a crumbling old order (US-led West) and a rivalrous new Axis that is struggling to be born — China-Russia-Iran-North Korea (CRIK). Award winning journalist John Pilger tells us that Mao in 1944 had made an appeal to Washington, «China must industrialise, this can only be done by Free Enterprise. Chinese and American interests fit together, economically and politically. We cannot risk crossing America; we cannot risk any conflict». He received no reply. Mao's successors decided to join the system and beat the US at its own game — capitalism & innovation — and are now with its bete noire Russia challenging the American-led order. Iran and North Korea have strengthened this New Axis. The evolving powerplay has created the precise construct that Henry Kissinger had once warned: a Bear-Dragon tandem that is in delightful synchrony. The New Axis has not only performed well in the Ukrainian and West Asian theatres of war, but is also looking towards the Global South (125 countries, 80% of the global population, 40% of global GDP) as its wider field of play.

T20 World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma has penned an emotional farewell note to the team's former head coach Rahul Dravid, expressing «gratitude» for his man-management skills and for leaving his baggage of stardom outside the dressing room. Dravid, following a nearly three-year long stint as head coach, stepped down at the end of India's title-winning T20 World Cup campaign in the West Indies last month. «My wife (Ritika Sajdeh) refers to you as my work wife and I am lucky to get to call you that too,» the current skipper wrote about his first international captain on his Instagram page. Rohit's tribute was also an indicator of how the player-coach equation works in the Indian dressing room.

Waves Waters War Inside testing Arsenal Taiwan on alert over 'waves' of missile tests in north China
Taiwan's defence ministry said on Saturday it was monitoring «waves» of missile tests taking place in China's far northern region of Inner Mongolia and that its air defence forces were on alert. Democratically governed Taiwan, which China views as its own territory, keeps a close watch on all Chinese military activities given Beijing's regular activities around the island, but only rarely releases details of what it sees taking place inside China. The ministry said that from 4 a.m. (2000 GMT on Friday) it had detected «multiple waves of test launches» by China's Rocket Force in an area of Inner Mongolia 2,000 km (1,200 miles) from Taiwan.

United States and China resumed semi-official nuclear arms talks in March for the first time in five years, with Beijing's representatives telling U.S. counterparts that they would not resort to atomic threats over Taiwan, according to two American delegates who attended. The Chinese representatives offered reassurances after their U.S. interlocutors raised concerns that China might use, or threaten to use, nuclear weapons if it faced defeat in a conflict over Taiwan. Beijing views the democratically governed island as its territory, a claim rejected by the government in Taipei. «They told the U.S. side that they were absolutely convinced that they are able to prevail in a conventional fight over Taiwan without using nuclear weapons,» said scholar David Santoro, the U.S. organiser of the Track Two talks, the details of which are being reported by Reuters for the first time.

Racing War country Arsenal Cold War 2: Do not let it spark off a nuclear arms race
The deadly stockpiles of nuclear weapons built by Cold War adversaries Russia and the US gave the ‘MAD’ doctrine of ‘Mutually Assured Destruction’ a literal ring. With thousands of nukes each, both had enough to destroy the planet many times over. Could today’s geopolitical divide between a China-led bloc and the US-led West imperil the world with another arms race being pushed beyond the limits of reason by its force of rivalry? According to the latest report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), a think-tank, all nine nuclear-armed countries—the US, Russia, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel—modernized their arsenals in 2023, while some deployed new weapon systems.

UPS Remark Election War International Arsenal The world should take up China's nuclear no-first-use treaty proposal
The world is too distracted with ongoing wars and high-stakes election campaigns to pay attention to a remarkable proposal from China. At the United Nations Conference on Disarmament held in Geneva this February, one of Beijing’s senior officials dealing with nuclear weapons policy declared that “nuclear-weapon states should negotiate and conclude a treaty on no-first-use of nuclear weapons against each other or make a political statement in this regard." There had been some indications towards the end of 2023 that China was planning to engage the United States in a new phase of discussions on nuclear security, but the proposal in Geneva is as breathtaking as it is promising. The world—and India — must approach it constructively.
