Arteta responds to 'dark arts' taunts by Man City as injuries mount for Arsenal
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta bristled at suggestions his team used «dark arts» in the feisty English Premier League match at Manchester City, saying he preferred to look at «facts» rather than opinions. Arteta said there were «a few players» who will be unavailable for the League Cup third-round match against Bolton on Wednesday, one of whom could have a serious injury. He didn't disclose any names. This development came after Arsenal players were accused of play-acting and feigning injuries by some of their Man City counterparts during the 2-2 draw on Sunday at Etihad Stadium.

That painting’s a steal: How the Indian art fraternity is preserving their vintage collections
art thief. For one, art thieves in movies are portrayed as being suave and sophisticated as opposed to your sneaky and slithery garden-variety thief. These are people who, one is made to believe, enjoy the finer things in life and, yes, can engage in a conversation with a liberal sprinkling of phrases like how a painting talks to the performative sensibility of the sublime and evokes the oblique objectives of precarious assemblages. Romanticisation of criminality—and gibberish—aside, art has aesthetic, emotional and monetary value, and where there is value there is greed. Little surprise then that India’s art community was shaken up when SH Raza’s 1992 painting Nature, valued at around `2.5 crore, reportedly went missing from Astaguru’s warehouse in Mumbai. The auction house has filed a police complaint, according to a report in the Times of India on September 11. The painting was put up by its owner Indra Veer for auctioning in 2020, and was last seen in March 2022. The case has put the spotlight on the safety of high-value art, even as the market for Indian art soars. According to the 2024 Hurun India Art List, sales by the top 50 artists reached a record-breaking `301 crore, a 19%increase from 2023.

PM Modi hits out at NC-Congress alliance over Pak minister's remarks, says no power can restore Art 370
Modi on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Congress and NC alliance following remarks by Pakistan's defence minister regarding Article 370 and accused the coalition of pursuing the neighbouring country's agenda. Modi claimed that Pakistan's agenda fosters violence and unrest. The prime minister asserted that Article 370 cannot be reinstated in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasising that «no power on Earth can bring back Article 370». His attack came after Pakistani defence minister Khawaja Asif revealed that his country, the National Conference (NC) and the Congress are on one page on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir's special status and the restoration of statehood.

Indian festivals and the life cycles of old clothes
Indian festivals involve new clothes. Onam, which is today, will see Malayalis receiving new mundus and saris. What isn’t often appreciated is that new clothes mean more old ones, which in time will stop being worn entirely — and then possibly cut up and reused at home. This may seem weird in these days of fast fashion, where nearly new clothes are jettisoned (hopefully ending up in ‘pre loved’ sales rather than the garbage dump). But old clothes were ideally suited for many kitchen tasks. Most obviously as dusters, but for culinary uses too like making paneer or hung curd, which needed fine thin cloth to drain away the whey. This is so integral to cheese-making that cheesecloth is manufactured for this purpose. The Oxford Companion to Cheese notes that it is made “in a variety of thread counts, ranging from coarser weaves in the range of 60 threads per inch… to finer fabrics at 90 threads per inch”. Coarse cloth is used for harder cheeses, drained of more moisture, while finer fabrics retain more, for softer, creamier cheese.
