Five takeaways from the Paris Paralympics
Paris Paralympic Games. As the campaign comes close to an end, here are five takeaways from Paris: ADOPT MORE SPORTS: There were 23 sports disciplines at the Paris Paralympics but the majority of India’s success came in just four — athletics, archery, shooting and badminton. In swimming, for example, there were 140 medals on offer, but India had just one participant. Clearly, there is immense room for improvement. India need to adopt other sports to win many more medals in Los Angeles in 2028. THERE IS A STORY: Paralympics are less about the medals and more about participants. Behind every medal or every athlete is a story. Dharambir Nain and Pranay Soorma won gold and silver respectively in the men’s club throw event. However, the disability quotient with them is so high that it is impossible to predict their performance. “They have no control over their bowel movements. They often pass urine while competing,” said Satyanarayana Shimoga, coach of the track and field contingent. “If they aren’t sitting in the perfect position, they can’t perform.” Unless you know their story, it is impossible to appreciate their success. “Prachi (Yadav) made the finals of her event despite a serious eye infection. We had to dress her eye every six hours. For her to play with the infection shows how resilient she is”, said Dr Ameya Kagali, medical head of the contingent.

Love for my sport keeps me grounded: Manu Bhaker
It’s not exactly how MANU BHAKER wanted to enjoy her Olympic success — two bronze medals. After a hectic schedule, she was looking forward to ‘some time off’ where she would put her feet up and just relax. Instead, she has been on a whirlwind tour of media houses, photo shoots, corporate events, podcasts studios etc. But, like she handles all the tricky situations at the shooting range, she is acing this phase of her life too. ET catches up with Bhaker to talk about her life after the Olympic success, her memories of pressure moments just before she won the medals and more. Excerpts What has changed around you since winning the Olympic medals? I have been attending a lot of events since then. Which is okay because I enjoy everything. It was pre-decided that I would take a long break after the Olympics. But because of these events, I have been travelling a lot. I had thought I would get some time off and I would sleep, have rest, and stay at home. But I haven’t got time to do all that. I am not complaining (laughs). I am enjoying this phase also.

Especially Bhupinder Hooda, Deepender Hooda, Priyanka ji, and Rahul ji. This is a movement of Congress. And today this thing has been proved. In this entire movement, the conspiracy that happened against us, Congress was involved in it and Bhupinder Hooda was leading it,» he said.

Roger Federer asks why Jannik Sinner wasn't suspended after failing two drug tests
Roger Federer has questioned why Jannik Sinner was not provisionally suspended after the Italian world No. 1 failed two drugs tests earlier in the year. There were claims that Sinner was receiving preferential treatment. More recently, Sinner admitted that he got a frosty reception in the locker room at the US Open. Federer weighed in on the debate when speaking to NBC, saying: “I understand the frustration of, ‘Has he been treated the same as others?’ And I think this is where it comes down to”. “I think we all trust pretty much that Jannik didn’t do anything, but the inconsistency potentially that he didn’t have to sit out while they weren’t 100 per cent sure what was going on, I think that’s the question that needs to be answered.

From 1 to 22: The rise of Paralympians
India won its 20th medal at the Paris Paralympics, surpassing Tokyo’s 19 — medal mark. On Wednesday, Sachin Sarjerao Khilari – silver in men’s shot put F46 event — and Harvinder Singh — gold in men’s individual recurve open — added two more medals to push India’s count to 22. Considering that there was only one medal in London 2012 and just four in Rio 2016, the progress is staggering. Naturally, the rise in medals has coincided with the increase in the number of Indian athletes qualifying for the Paralympics. In another positive development, women athletes have outperformed men on many occasions. In Tokyo, all four badminton medals were won by men (Pramod Bhagat, Krishna Nagar, Suhas Yathiraj and Manoj Sarkar). In Paris, however, three women – Thulasimathi Murugesan, Nithya Sre Sivan and Manisha Ramadass – have made it to the podium, while only two men won the medals.
