Anant Singhal on state of Indian aviation industry, pilot shortages and more
Anant Singhal, Team Lead, CAPA India, says “in the first quarter of the fiscal, the airlines witnessed very strong yields. In the current fiscal ending this month, there was a dip of about 15% to 17%. Coming to the next quarter, it again will be robust because demand will increase and we expect some upward swing in fares and in the yields that airlines earn.”There have been a lot of issues related to the aviation industry of late, flight cancellations, pilot resignations. What is indicative of the Indian aviation sector? Will we tide over it soon enough? Before I answer your question, I would like to provide some context. Right now, we have about 135 aircraft of Indian carriers that are grounded. Now, with that in mind, the pilot shortage that we would have expected is somewhat better, because 135 aircraft are on ground. As and when these aircraft start flying again and new inductions come in, the challenge of pilot shortage will likely go up and a lot of airlines are expected to face challenges with this area. Right now, it seems to be somewhat manageable, although lately because of the 40 resignations, about 80% of the schedule had to be cancelled. But overall, from the industry perspective, the issue of shortage of pilots is somewhat manageable, but when these aircraft start flying again it will start creating challenges for the industry.

ESMA pitches '17 MoU with RBI for clearing houses
ESMA) is said to have proposed to the Reserve Bank of India to continue their existing Memorandum of Understanding on the treatment of clearing houses, a step that could resolve roadblocks to billions of dollars' worth of bond trading. The latest communication by Europe's top financial markets regulator to the RBI, made earlier this month, comes amid a standoff between the Indian central bank and European authorities over the latter's requirement of rights of audit and inspection of domestic clearing houses, including The Clearing Corporation of India Ltd (CCIL). «Around two weeks ago, ESMA put forward the idea of continuing with the current MoU that is in place. The existing framework does have certain provisions for oversight but within a clearly defined understanding that nothing would be done bypassing the RBI,» a person aware of the development said. «The root of the disagreement that broke out since last year is the EMIR (European Market Infrastructure Regulation) 2 which has far greater provisions of foreign oversight over domestic clearing houses.

People being misled in name of caste, religion so that they don't ask basic questions: Priyanka at Chhattisgarh rally
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday said the sentiments of people were being used for political motives and they were being misled in the name of religion and caste as part of a conspiracy to ensure they don't ask basic questions. Addressing the 'Mahila Samridhi Sammelan' organised by the Bhupesh Baghel government in Bhilai, she attacked the Narendra Modi dispensation at the Centre for not talking about unemployment and price rise even as «industrialist friends» were making Rs 1,600 crore per day. Recalling a childhood experience, Gandhi said she and her father Rajiv Gandhi were visiting his constituency and the then PM, who was driving their vehicle, got down to talk to people. «A woman started shouting at my father complaining about the poor condition of roads.

China's list of disappearing leaders continues to grow
China's top diplomat, then the commander and political commissar of the People's Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF), and now the country's minister of defense. The list of disappearing leaders just continues to mount, as Beijing draws a veil of secrecy over the obvious failure of the regime's efforts to curb personal greed and excesses. Speculation about the fate of Defense Minister Li Shangfu took on a new luster when US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel cheekily tweeted that the «unemployment rate» in the Chinese government was very high.

Dharani Sugars' promoter gets another chance to win it back
National Asset Reconstruction Company (NARCL) emerged as the winning bidder for the debt of Dharani Sugars and Chemicals at an uncontested Swiss auction, paving the way for the promoter to submit a fresh settlement offer with the new lender, said people aware of the development. The Supreme Court had stayed a liquidation order of the sugar maker given by the National COmpany Law Tribunal (NCLT). The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal, too, had upheld the NCLT order. Lenders did not receive any counteroffer for the ₹222.5 crore binding offer by NARCL, which triggered a Swiss challenge auction held on September 18. Officials from Dharani Sugars declined to comment on the matter. Dharani Sugars, which was admitted for insolvency in July 2021, had admitted claims of ₹707 crore. The resolution professional received two plans but 91.9% of lenders rejected both on May 18, 2023.
