At Sherpa meet, G20 members agree to phase down unabated coal power
G20 members late Thursday agreed to make an effort towards the “phasedown of unabated coal power”, staying with the text of the Bali declaration on the issue. This was decided at the Sherpa-level deliberations that aim to finalise the text for the Leaders’ Declaration. India’s proposal to expand it to “phase-down of fossil fuel” ran into stiff opposition from Saudi Arabia and Russia, people aware of the deliberations told ET. The “phasedown of coal power”, agreed on in earlier declarations, is in the context of energy efficiency and in line with national circumstances, and does not impinge on India’s energy security, the people said. The cue was taken from the Bali declaration where the phrase “phasedown of unabated coal power” found agreement among all members. The language has also been used earlier in the UNFCCC Glasgow Climate Pact and the Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan. Unabated coal power is generally understood to mean coal power without carbon capture utilisation and storage. There was no mention of a phasedown of coal power at the outcome of the G20 Energy Transition ministerial meeting in July, a prelude to the leaders’ summit.

A green development paradigm has been our global endeavour
climate change, discussions around sustainable development have become the global chorus of our times. However, within these discourses, a critical reality is often glossed over: the disproportionate responsibility of global emissions. A keen examination reveals that the nations of the Global South, like India, often portrayed as burgeoning emitters, are not the principal contributors to the crisis we face.

More and more individuals are looking at upskilling opportunity: report
upskilling opportunities that match specific requirements and this presents an opportunity to add over one hundred million people to the workforce, increase the GDP and propel the Indian economy towards $4 trillion, according to a report. These findings were recently shared by Omidyar Network India (ONI) in its report, The Next Frontiers: Skilling and Employability Solutions for the Next Half Billion, with Redseer. The report explores the opportunity of skilling and employing a vast group of people who are entering the workforce in diverse ways. This comes at a critical time when India is already home to a steadily growing work-ready population that is expected to increase till 2049, given our demographic dividend. Meanwhile, our workforce participation is still low at 46%, and especially low for women at 27%. This makes it clear that opportunities for work and skilling for those opportunities need to work hand in hand. The report drills down into a subsegment of the workforce market that it estimates to be about 580 million. The report suggests that the skilling solutions need to be granular to really benefit these different personas and their needs. Of these diverse personas, it highlights the potential demand for upskilling for about 230 million people who are in search of better jobs. These include, according to the report’s definition:

‘Current rally is comparatively more sustainable’
Indian equity market has witnessed several upswings in recent years, but the current rally is particularly noteworthy for its strength and breadth. Though inflation concerns and risk aversion due to Fitch’s downgrade of US credit rating may have led to some sobering of sentiments in the India Equity, the long-term growth prospects look intact. If we look at the broader macro backdrop in the past cycle, there are notable differences between the current rally vs the pre-covid times — that is, 2013-2018 (especially in mid/small category). The current rally is positively different from the previous rally in the 2013-18 period in several ways.

RBI seeks feedback on settling Indian bonds via Euroclear
RBI) has been making informal inquiries with select bond market participants about the impact of allowing settlement of domestic sovereign debt on the Euroclear platform, a move that experts believe would help expand the overseas investor base for local debt and eventually lower borrowing costs through inclusion of these bonds in globally tracked indices. «They (the RBI) are not averse to the process of settlement of Indian bonds on the Euroclear platform and have been taking feedback from the market,» a source aware of the development said. «Such discussions happened earlier too — there were some concerns over a parallel yield curve developing, although the market has developed more now and is much deeper.» In most cases, bonds listed on an international index are settled on global platforms such as those offered by the Belgium-based Euroclear. Although Euroclear settlements are not mandatory for inclusion of Indian sovereign debt on global bond indices such as those offered by JP Morgan and Bloomberg Barclays, the presence of a settlement mechanism on a global platform is seen to help push the cause for inclusion.'Tax Relief Unlikely' A Reuters report, citing Bank of America Securities, said last month that index inclusion could lead to inflows of $6 to $12 billion over a period of time into India, thereby helping lower yields on sovereign debt.
