Is your landlord a non-resident Indian? Know your tax compliances.
If your landlord is a non-resident Indian, you must know some income tax rules that can affect you as a tenant. From the rent you pay to your NRI landlord, you must deduct a certain percentage of the rent at source—tax deduction at source, or TDS—and pay to the Indian government. If you do not deduct the tax and pay that to the government, you may be held liable for that amount plus interest and penalty.

Walk, just like that
We both smiled. Cars are an extension of our legs, to put it very simplistically. Since we travel greater distances than our legs can handle, we use mechanised transport. Period. The same cannot be said of walking. We walk not just to go from Point A to B and back. We walk also to exercise. And to meditate, as suggested by Buddhist Zen monk Thich Nhat Hanh. When walking becomes a means to an end, as in reaching a destination or carrying out a chore, it can get tedious. But if walking is meditation, or you walk simply because you wish to do that, without an agenda, it becomes pleasurable.

Kashmir needs a few more peaceful years: Lt Gen Ghai
15 Corps, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai said that Kashmir needs a few more peaceful years like 2022, 2023 and 2024 for a lasting peace. He said armed forces cannot be withdrawn or diluted from any area at this stage as the region is going through a consolidation phase. He added that around 80 militants, including 40 foreigners, are active in the Valley, but this year just two locals were recruited in the militant ranks. This is negligible compared to even 2023, when around a dozen locals were recruited, he said. «We need a few more years like 2024, 2023 and 2022 for this peace to be enduring and lasting,» said Lt Gen Ghai, adding the biggest challenge for the forces is to keep the situation as it is today.
