As Hurricane Helene approaches Florida, a federal emergency has been declared.
Florida has declared a state of emergency and is undergoing evacuations as Hurricane Helene approaches. Numerous counties, including Hillsborough and Pinellas, declared the closure of their schools. Several counties, including Sarasota and Charlotte, are under an order of evacuation. It is advised that those in the storm's possible path should be ready for a week or more without power. A state of emergency was proclaimed for almost the whole state by Governor Ron DeSantis. In a Tuesday news briefing, Governor Ron DeSantis stated that people still have time to prepare, review their hurricane plan, and make sure that they are executing their hurricane preparedness plan. Impacts might reach even farther, even if the storm is predicted to make landfall either in the Florida Panhandle or near the northern Gulf Coast. It is advised that residents in the possible path should get ready to go up to a week without power. Also Read :Julie Chrisley sent to 7 years in jail. Here's what has happened

SC cautions courts against misogynistic comments, says no part of India can be called Pakistan
Supreme Court on Wednesday cautioned courts against making comments that may be construed as «misogynistic» or directed towards a particular «gender or community» and said no part of Indian territory can be called Pakistan. The apex court's strong observations came as it closed the suo motu proceedings over Karnataka High Court judge Justice V Srishananda's alleged objectionable comments during court proceedings. The Supreme Court also noted that he had apologised for his observations during open court proceedings on September 21. A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud observed that since Justice Srishananda was not a party to proceedings before it, «we desist from making any further observations save and except to express our serious concern about both the reference to gender and to a segment of the community». The top court on September 20 took suo motu cognisance of the judge's comments against a woman lawyer during court proceedings in a case and his reference to a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru as «Pakistan» in another.

Haryana elections: Rabia Kidwai blazes a trail as Nuh's first woman candidate, but challenges aplenty
Nuh, counted amongst the country's most backward areas, Rabia Kidwai has broken a glass ceiling — becoming the first woman to contest Assembly polls from the constituency where women are rarely seen without a veil, let alone lead a political campaign and fight an election. While the 34-year-old businesswoman from Gurguram is aware of the myriad challenges that confronts her — the deep-rooted gender bias, the outsider tag in Nuh, the general lack of awareness and education among voters, and seasoned political opponents — she also knows she represents a change which is precisely why, she feels, people would vote for her in these assembly polls in Haryana. Kidwai, granddaughter of former state Governor Akhlaq Ur Rehman Kidwai, has been fielded by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Up against her are battle-hardened Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed and Indian National Lok Dal's Tahir Hussain, who also holds sway among the locals. Kidwai is up for the challenge though, banking on her family's political lineage and her being a woman. As the polling day nears, she is busy campaigning, seeking votes for herself and her party.

Bid to promote green funding: Centre reviews proposals to promote transition finance
transition finance, aimed at helping high carbon-emitting industries fund their shift towards decarbonisation at lower interest rates. One of the suggestions made by stakeholders, including banks, is to create a specific fund set up by state-run financial institutions for lending and refinance to smaller and emerging companies, said people aware of the developments. «The proposed fund structure aims to help smaller companies scale up green operations and secure lower-cost credit, tied to meeting specific carbon emissions reduction targets,» said an official, who did not wish to be identified, adding that it would be easier to monitor smaller firms to ensure that they are following norms and not greenwashing.

Burdened by plastics: What’s the road ahead for sustainable packaging?
single-use plastics were banned on July 1, 2022. However, India used several more types of single-use plastic items. The Plastic Waste Makers Index 2019 ranks India as the thirteenth-largest investor in single-use plastic polymer production across the world. A section of experts and stakeholders say that the ban is not being uniformly enforced and these materials are being used for primary packaging across sectors. Vaibhav Anant, Founder & CEO of Bengaluru-based sustainable packaging solutions provider Bambrew, says that the primary reason single-use plastics are still being utilised for packaging across industries is a deep-rooted and widespread belief that there are no commercially viable alternatives. “All of this is a misconception,” adds Anant.

Congress challenges Kangana Ranaut to prove charge against Himachal govt, Sonia Gandhi
Himachal Pradesh Congress on Monday challenged Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut to prove her allegation that the state government took loans and diverted the money to Sonia Gandhi, failing which it said it would file a defamation case against her. Himachal Pradesh minister Vikramaditya Singh told reporters that her comments showed the BJP MP's «intellectual bankruptcy». «There cannot be a bigger foolish statement than saying that funds coming from the Centre or the state's funds for development are being given to Sonia Gandhi,» he said. «I openly challenge BJP MP Kangana Ranaut to show proof of even Rs 1 being diverted or apologise to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi for making such baseless and unwarranted allegations against her. Otherwise, the Congress will file a defamation case against her,» the minister added.

Parliament should consider bringing amendment to POCSO Act: SC
Supreme Court on Monday suggested that Parliament should seriously consider bringing an amendment to the POCSO Act for substituting the term "child pornography" with «child sexual exploitative and abuse material» with a view to reflect more accurately the reality of such offences. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala said the Centre, in the meantime, may consider to bring about the suggested amendment to the POCSO Act by way of an Ordinance. «We put the courts to notice that the term 'child pornography' shall not be used in any judicial order or judgment, and instead the term 'child sexual exploitative and abuse material' (CSEAM) should be endorsed,» the bench said. The apex court delivered a landmark judgement which held that watching and downloading child pornography are offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
