Bangladesh: BSF thwarts attempts to cross border in Bengal
Bangladeshis gathered across Sitalkuchi in West Bengal, seeking to cross over to India, and many more are moving towards the border amid reports of attacks on minorities, people aware of the matter told ET on Friday. Bangladeshis were seen trying to cross Kharpa river near Pathantuli village of Sitalkuchi block in Coochbehar district, they said. BSF is dealing with this «emerging challenge (that) is new to BSF». «Guwahati Frontier of Border Security Force successfully addressed a significant and different kind of challenge at the India-Bangladesh border in Coochbehar district. Approximately 1,000 individuals, reportedly Bangladeshi nationals, approached the international border, seeking refuge in India,» BSF said on Friday.

Rapido goes past $1 billion GMV mark
Rapido, which started as a bike-taxi platform, has crossed gross merchandise value (GMV) of $1 billion, according to people aware of the matter, driven by its expansion into segments such as cabs and auto-rickshaws and an aggressive expansion into more than a 100 cities. This also marks the emergence of a significant third player in the ride-hailing business–after Uber and Ola–which has remained largely stagnant after the pandemic. Rapido has recorded more than three times growth since FY23, when it was clocking a GMV of about $300 million. It is also present in the parcel pick-up-and-drop segment.

Ola Electric prepares to list later this week, founder Bhavish Aggarwal is busy charging up his 14-year-old ride-hailing business, according to people in the know. His latest efforts are directed towards tapping the red-hot quick commerce sector and is Ola’s second attempt at the business. Ola Cabs parent firm ANI Technologies plans to set up its own dark stores amid rising demand for rapid deliveries, said these people. Dark stores are small neighbourhood warehouses that stock products delivered by these services. These will be operated by Ola, people briefed on the matter said, adding that robots will be deployed to reduce human involvement. The company also plans to launch its own Unified Payments Interface (UPI) offering for consumers, said the people cited. Aggarwal is likely to unveil these initiatives at its annual Independence Day event on August 15. However, these plans may undergo changes.

IAF's first multi-country air exercise underway in Tamil Nadu's Sulur
Tarang Shakti, the IAF organised multinational exercise that will see the participation of air force units including from Germany and France got underway here on Tuesday and will see a number of advanced fighters and other aircraft taking to the skies as part of the various simulated scenario. Simulated scenario, including electronic warfare, would be part of the exercise being held in this western city, about 500 km from Chennai, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari said "...we have at least six different types of IAF aircraft flying alongside the Eurofighter Typhoons and Rafale from the visiting countries...we have also simulated electronic warfare environment, we simulate radars, we simulate air defences and operate in some sort of a network environment against multiple kinds of opposition in every mission." «The whole idea is to be able to operate- you are aware that we are without a common data link with the visiting Air Forces, so we need to operate without a datalink. That itself is a very complex exercise. The main focus will be on what we call the large force engagements where large numbers of formations will be operating together,» the Air chief told reporters.

Govt wants sponsor banks to help RRBs upgrade technology
government has asked state-run banks to assist their regional rural arms in upgrading their technology and onboarding them to the National Payment Corporation of India's (NPCI) BASE platform that facilitates the direct benefit transfer (DBT) program. Last week, several cooperative banks and regional rural banks (RRBs) were affected by a ransomware on one of the technology service providers, C-Edge Technologies. «Sponsor banks have been asked to help their RRBs with technology upgrades, which will improve their performance in areas related to credit disbursement, NPA management and cybersecurity,» said a government official, adding that Nabard will be closely monitoring this initiative.

CBI probing Hindalco & MoEF ex-Director over green nod to Talabira Project in 2014-15
CBI) is probing Hindalco Industries Ltd (HIL) and a former director of the ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) in a corruption case. According to the first information report (FIR), CBI has booked the company, Dr T Chandini, the then director of MoEF, and unknown persons under certain sections of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act and Section 120 (B) pertaining to criminal conspiracy of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). «This is an old matter pertaining to 2014-15. These mines were de-allocated as part of the government's de-allocation process. This is a matter of public record where more than 100 mines were de-allocated,» a Hindalco spokesperson told ET.
