LIC sees red over policy 'trading' by ACESO, to take legal action
Life Insurance Corporation of India is preparing for a second legal battle over trading in insurance policies, something the insurance behemoth says is illegal, arguing that such transactions threaten to hit at the root of the industry and expose policy buyers to losses. India's biggest insurer is seeking to challenge legally the campaign by ACESO, a company that claims to be an asset monetiser and focused on buying up LIC policies, said officials aware of the plans. It is luring policyholders to transfer their rights to it for a consideration instead of surrendering them. ACESO, founded by two chartered accountants — Ketan Mehta and Himanshu Ashar — is offering ALIP or Assign Your Life Insurance Policy. This it says is based on a legal contract which is permissible under the law. It brings double benefits to those involved in the insurance policy — the agents and the policyholder. When assigned, ACESO is said to be paying more than what LIC would have paid and the continuity of commissions for agents.

Brands bet big on influencers to stay active, virtually
Consumer goods companies such as Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Dabur, and Godrej Consumer Products (GCP) are amping up their influencer marketing strategies to boost customer engagement, brand loyalty, and awareness, underscoring the growing role of influencers in purchasing decisions of consumers. In their FY24 annual reports, these companies highlighted the rising role of influencers in the overall marketing mix as consumers are spending more time on short-form snackable content on platforms like Instagram and YouTube. This scenario has led companies to engage with macro, micro, and nano influencers for driving brand visibility. A recent EY report predicted that India's influencer marketing industry will reach ₹3,375 crore by 2026, from ₹2,344 crore in 2024, largely due to the growing use of social media influencers for sales and brand engagement.

Relationships
The seer and seen
seer, one who sees, and the seen in a distinctive manner, building levels of awareness and transitions in the seemingly ordinary relationships of our everyday observations. The eye is seer. The form and colour, the seen. That, eye, is the seen and the mind is its seer. The witness alone is the Seer of thoughts in the mind and never the seen, according to Drig Drishya Viveka, verse 1. Our eyes perceive a myriad objects in their field of vision, yet they cannot simultaneously observe themselves in this process of viewing, and, hence, remain separate from these objects. While the objects before our eyes change, the essence and role of the eyes as instruments of vision remains constant. Once these objects are viewed, the mind takes on the role of the seer. Powering the mind is our consciousness — spirit, breath, life initiating the entire process of viewing to begin with. Hence, this makes our consciousness, our spirit, the ultimate Seer.

What's stopping AMCs, insurers from entering remote markets like Kargil?
NEW DELHI : India had 162 million demat accounts as of June, and 93 million SIP (systematic investment plan) accounts as of July—a strong indicator of increasing financialization in the country. Still, there are places where terms like “Sensex" or “Nifty" are foreign to people. Kargil, in the Union territory of Ladakh, over 200 kilometres from Srinagar, is one such place.

Mutual funds are a better investment option than stocks from a tax point of view; know why
tax on stocks and mutual funds stays. It has been seven years since this tax was introduced and the only change has been the rate increase from 10% to 12.5% this year. This is now the uniform rate not just for stocks and equity funds, but for many other types of investments. However, this is where the similarity ends. For investors who want to earn long-term returns and build real wealth through equity-based assets, the tax structure means that significant attention needs to be paid to where they invest and when they buy and sell those investments. The single most important point to be noted is that it’s far more beneficial, from a tax point of view, to invest in mutual funds than stocks. While this has been true since February 2018, the hike in long-term capital gains tax in this year’s Budget has made it that much more important. In any case, even earlier, many investors did not appreciate this about taxation. I’ll recap the underlying principle. All equity portfolios need some buying or selling as individual stocks become more or less desirable. This is true even if you are good at choosing stocks and holding most of these for several years. Time goes by, circumstances change, companies and markets evolve, and the formerly good stocks have to be sold and something better bought. If you are investing in stocks yourself, these transactions will translate into tax liability.

Trai seeks govt clarity on backhaul spectrum rules
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has sought clarifications from the government on the allocation of backhaul spectrum, including the E and V bands, in the wake of the new Telecommunications Act that said such airwaves should be given administratively. As per the Act, 'radio backhaul' shall mean the use of radio frequency only to interconnect telecom equipment other than customer devices in telecommunication networks. The clarification became important as the regulator had listed out different options, including auction, to allocate backhaul spectrum in its consultation paper. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) too had said spectrum in the E and V bands can be given through auction, though certain quantum in the V band can be delicensed for indoor coverage.

Two steps to compassion
Compassion is a sublime virtue and meditative practice. Compassion distinguishes itself from loving kindness because it extends beyond feelings of warmheartedness and goodwill toward others. SC 'observation' on creamy layer: Arjun Ram Meghwal accuses opposition of creating confusion
Arjun Ram Meghwal has accused the opposition of creating confusion among people over the Supreme Court «observation» on creamy layer among SCs and STs, and asserted that the Constitution given by B R Ambedkar has no provision of a creamy layer. In an interview to PTI Videos, he said the the BJP-led NDA government will follow Ambedkar's Constitution and will continue the reservation system for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as provided in it. Meghwal noted that though the opposition is aware that the top court had only made an «observation» on creamy layer, it is trying to create confusion among people. On Saturday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had said that the idea of denying reservation to SCs and STs on account of the creamy layer concept is «condemnable»

India’s good bet: Quad in the Indian Ocean
Indian Ocean Region (IOR), connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, is emerging as a critical axis of global trade, skilled young population and geo-economic prosperity. However, this region has witnessed significant transformations in recent years. For instance, China's expanding influence from Bab-el-Mandeb to Strait of Malacca is posing new and unique challenges each passing day. This continues to pose challenges to the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) group, whose sole aim is to create a cooperative bulwark against Chinese expansionism and aggressiveness. China’s economic and military might have increased, so has its interest in securing its maritime trade routes and expanding its influence across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Here, we are reminded of the quote by Admiral Alfred T Mahan, «whoever controls the seas controls the world». Furthermore, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has seen significant investments in port infrastructure and maritime logistics, exemplified by projects like the Djibouti Port in the Horn of Africa, Gwadar Port in Pakistan, and the Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka among others.
