U.S Presidential elections 2024: Harris' biggest challenge; holding momentum till November
Kamala Harris experienced following her nomination convention, less than two weeks ago, when they believed that she would be linked to President Joe Biden's potentially disastrous reelection campaign. She has given hope to Democrats who had lost hope and revitalized a party that was about to lose hope. But the sobering truth is that success is far from certain. It is not likely that Harris will be able to defeat former President Donald Trump with the swing voters that the thousands of ecstatic delegates in the hall this week represented. Numerous presidential candidates throughout history have stirred their supporters during conventions but ultimately failed in November. Trump is no pushover, whatever else he may be. The next two and a half months will be brutal for Harris. Also Read: Not UPenn or Georgetown, Barron Trump is heading to New York for college this fall

The Hyundai Motor IPO: How the valuations took a reality check
India's cooling appetite for hatchbacks and sedans is proving to be a double-edged sword for Hyundai Motor India Ltd, as the country's second-largest passenger vehicles maker draws closer to an initial public offering (IPO). After two years of blazing growth, passenger vehicle wholesales in July fell 2.5% from a year earlier, and manufacturers have been offering discounts since May to clear stocks. While falling demand has reduced pressure on Hyundai's stretched production capacity, it has also depressed its expected valuation to $16-20 billion from $25-30 billion earlier, two people aware of the IPO discussions said.

Independent directors are jostling at the boarding gate
Of course, certain unlisted companies or those listed on exchanges other than NSE as well as those gearing up for listing also need to appoint independent directors, but that number will be relatively small. The increased visibility, responsibility and remuneration of independent directors has led to rising awareness of this strategic role in Corporate India. Besides, several factors have spurred more aspirants to sign up to be independent directors. The big 'board refresh' this year-involving stepping down of independent directors who were completing 10 years (two terms) on a company's board-was expected to make way for new faces on the boards. Secondly, the need for women independent directors on boards increased.

US jobless claims rise in latest week
unemployment benefits rose in the latest week, but the level still suggested a gradual cooling of the labor market remains intact. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 232,000 for the week ended Aug. 17, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 230,000 claims for the latest week. The latest data should continue to allay fears that the labor market is rapidly deteriorating, first raised after a much sharper than expected slowdown in job gains in July, which also saw the unemployment rate rise to a post-pandemic high of 4.3%.

Time is running out to address climate change concerns, says IIT Mumbai professor
Chetan Singh Solanki has stressed the urgent need for energy conservation and a global shift to renewable energy to tackle climate change. Highlighting the lack of climate awareness among the youth, Solanki advocated for the «Avoid, Minimize, Generate» strategy as key to mitigating the crisis. The IIT professor was speaking at a lecture session hosted by Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University on 'Environment-Friendly Energy Product Startups.' The lecture provided a comprehensive '6-Point Understanding' of climate change, focusing on the challenges and necessary corrective actions. Speaking to TOI on the sidelines of the session, Prof. Solanki said many young people are increasingly unaware of climate change, with some not even discussing the issue. He attributed this to the lack of emphasis or discussion from influential figures in their lives, such as parents, teachers, professors, influencers, and spiritual leaders. Even when climate change is addressed, it is often only at a superficial level, leaving young people with a shallow understanding of the issue.

GST sleuths tracking merchants skipping tax via digital payments
merchants due to a spike in cases of tax evasion, people aware of the development told ET. The Directorate General of Goods and Service Tax Intelligence (DGGI) is working closely with startups, payment aggregators and payment gateways to monitor if merchants are selling the right products with the right GST invoices, they said. “Tax evasion is very common among small merchants, where they would enlist as a seller of one product which attracts GST at a lower slab, but engage in selling other products which attract higher GST… The tax authorities intend to catch such merchants,” said Wriju Ray, cofounder of Idfy, a Mumbai-based identity verification startup that helps payment aggregators deal with identity frauds.

How dhyan leads to jnan
jnan indicate an absence or presence of awareness of the mind? Our minds are in a continuous state of thought, almost as if they are involuntarily scrolling through video reels of our thoughts. One thought follows another, and then another, trapping our intelligence in a whirlwind of positive, negative or wasteful thoughts. Many of these thoughts are about either some past event or some future uncertainty, both of which are nothing but a waste of mental capability.
