What would happen once we steered clear of sugar?
sugar consumption. The harmful link between disease and dietary sugar was recently outlined in a comprehensive assessment of published studies. Recognising this link between widely consumed food and disease is essential in marshalling forces to change harmful outcomes. These include coronary heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, tooth decay and some cancers. For over a decade, my research has focused on the mechanisms by which fructose intake plays into disease. A growing number of African countries have joined the worldwide efforts to reduce sugar intake. For instance, in an attempt to address obesity, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases, South Africa introduced a tax on sugar-sweetened drinks in 2018.

YS Sharmila's candidacy from Kadapa recasts family feud into political battle
Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency in Andhra Pradesh braces for a fierce contest as state Congress chief YS Sharmila is set to challenge her cousin and incumbent YSRCP MP YS Avinash Reddy. Avinash Reddy is one of the accused in the murder case of former minister and Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's uncle, Vivekananda Reddy, the younger brother of former chief minister late YS Rajasekhar Reddy. Kadapa is significant for the YS family, as it has been represented by Jagan, YS Rajasekhar Reddy, and Vivekananda Reddy on many occasions over the last several decades. Sharmila is Jagan's younger sibling. Sharmila's decision to contest from Kadapa effectively means that the family feud will now evolve into a full-fledged political battle. After starting her political venture from Telangana politics, Sharmila merged her outfit, YSR Telangana Party, into the Congress and shifted base to Andhra Pradesh, where she was appointed as the state unit chief.

When Rohit Sharma and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar requested Mumbai crowd to stop booing Hardik Pandya
Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya continued to face booing from fans even as former skipper Rohit Sharma is yet to shine with the bat in IPL 2024. Crowd hostility persisted at Wankhede stadium on Monday towards Hardik Pandya as he stepped out for the toss in Mumbai Indians' IPL match against Rajasthan Royals, with fans booing the skipper while chants of 'Rohit… Rohit' echoed throughout stadium. The jeers continued as Pandya spoke after losing the toss, prompting presenter Sanjay Manjrekar to urge the crowd to «behave». Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, clad in his training attire, conversed with former teammate Harbhajan Singh, who was present on the field as a commentator. Later, a video surfaced showing Rohit seemingly appealing to the crowd to cease booing his successor. However, Pandya temporarily managed to win over the crowd with his batting prowess, swiftly transforming the jeers into cheers with a flurry of boundaries during his brisk 21-ball 34. His entertaining innings lifted Mumbai Indians from a precarious 20/4 to 76/5 in the 10th over before his innings came to an end.

Lenders seek anonymity for officers tagging wilful defaulter accounts
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on shielding the identities of officers who spot wilful defaulters and build cases against errant borrowers, said bankers aware of the development. A recent High Court order has directed banks to name the employees on committees identifying a borrower as a wilful defaulter. The division bench order about Milind Patel, director of IFIN versus Union Bank of India, also asked the bank to provide the petitioner full access to the relevant documents and material on record. This is yet another contentious issue between lenders and the borrower. The Union Bank had argued that it is not obliged to provide evidence to the borrower as per the RBI guidelines. Lenders will seek RBI's guidance on this issue, too, the bankers cited above said. The bank management lobby, the Indian Banks Association (IBA), will soon seek advice on ways to address this issue.
