community wellness Bill country reports rights Government fully prepared to table Waqf bill, some parties seeking to stoke tensions in society: Kiren Rijiju
Kiren Rijiju asserted on Monday that the government is fully prepared to table the amended Waqf bill in Parliament, as he accused some political parties and organisations of seeking to foment unrest in society and mislead people over its provisions. With Parliament reconvening on Tuesday following the weekend and Eid holiday, he said the timing of the bill's introduction will be decided following consultations after Parliament meets but he wants it passed as soon as possible. The ongoing Budget session of Parliament is scheduled to end on April 4, and the bill will have to be passed by both the Lok Sabha as well as the Rajya Sabha to become a law. The government has indicated that it will discuss with leaders of different parties on Tuesday the timing of the Bill's introduction. It is likely to be first introduced in the Lower House, probably on Wednesday. Opposition parties are strongly opposed to the bill, slamming it as unconstitutional and against the interest of the Muslim community. Several leading Muslim organisations have been rallying support against the bill, which was scrutinised by a Joint Committee of Parliament and approved with several amendments. Speaking to reporters, Rijiju accused some political parties and organisations, a clear reference to the opposition and Muslim bodies, of resorting to lies to mislead society and stoke tensions, while insisting that the bill is in the interest of Muslims.

The wage bills of companies with operations in these places have increased by 20-25%, as their expenses on unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers have gone up, said top corporate executives. While this has been sharper than usual, the growing preference of people to work in gig roles and stay back in villages amid an increase in income from the rural employment guarantee scheme and other welfare programmes are compounding the problems for companies as they are finding it difficult to mobilise workers. States like Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Meghalaya, Odisha and Jharkhand have increased minimum wages by up to 38% in the last one year, as per industry executives and data compiled by staffing firm CIEL HR. Manpower cost has been a challenge because minimum wages have grown in certain markets by a very high degree, value fashion retailer V-Mart Retail managing director Lalit Agarwal said. COST Food Bill Trade Justice guidelines Courts Delhi HC rules service charges or tips on food bills voluntary, not mandatory
It upheld the 2022 guidelines issued by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) that prohibited hotels and restaurants from automatically levying a 'service charge' on food bills, reinforcing that these payments must remain voluntary. Dismissing the petitions filed by the Federation of Hotels and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) and the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), which challenged the CCPA’s power to issue such guidelines, Justice Prathiba M Singh said that the Authority is not merely a recommendatory body but is fully empowered and has the jurisdiction to pass the guidelines under the CPA, 2019. “In fact, issuing guidelines in consumer interest is an essential function of CCPA and the guidelines would have to be mandatorily complied with as the scheme of the Act clearly provides for enforcement of guidelines, which would not curtail fundamental rights it held.

Career security Bill pandemic trends President show Billionaire worth Rs 45,000 cr blasts Gen Z for job hopping every two years and calls it a 'red flag'. Blames the pandemic and parents. Why?
Elizabeth Uihlein has raised concerns over the growing trend of job-hopping among young professionals, stating that the traditional value of workplace stability has significantly declined. According to Uihlein, previous generations prioritized long-term career growth and financial security, but today’s workforce appears more willing to switch jobs frequently. She highlights how young employees at Uline, the packaging and shipping supply giant she leads, often resign before completing two years, posing challenges for companies investing in recruitment and training. She highlights three points- Free Health Insurance One of the key reasons behind this shift, she points out, is the accessibility of free health insurance. Under the Affordable Care Act, young adults can remain on their parents’ health plans until age 26, eliminating a major incentive to stay in one job. Additionally, financial support from parents for expenses like phone bills, car insurance, and streaming services allows many young workers to change jobs without worrying about immediate financial stability.

markets UPS Manufacturing Bill President country Equality Customs duty cuts, levy withdrawals an ongoing process, not linked to global events: FM Sitharaman
Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said the ongoing process of rationalizing customs duties and withdrawing the 6 per cent equalization levy, which began in 2023, is independent of any global events and will continue. Sitharaman said customs duty reductions are part of India's broader objective to strengthen its manufacturing hub and boost battery and advanced chemistry capacities. Replying to a debate on the Finance Bill 2025 in Rajya Sabha, Sitharaman said, «Consistently, budget after budget, we are coming up with a reduction in duties so that India's aspiration for being a manufacturing hub and India's aspiration in building capacities for battery manufacturing and advanced chemistry is being supported. So, this is a consistent thing.» «I heard quite a few members say, „Oh, the tariff war has started, so in response to the tariff announcements made by President Trump, here we are doing it. No, we have been doing it since 2023, steadily, every year. Newer items are being brought in, keeping in mind Atmanirbhar Bharat and, at the same time, Viksit Bharat's requirements, as well as simplifying the customs duty and compliance details,“ Sitharaman said. »So, this is an ongoing process. It has nothing to do with today's global situation but is a process that will continue even in the future," she added.

But the loophole used by sweepstakes casinos complicates the states' ability — and desire — to take action. That loophole?
