Kerala becomes first Indian state to establish senior citizens commission
Pinarayi Vijayan said on Thursday. Hailing the law enacted on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said this new commission would focus on protecting the rights, welfare, and rehabilitation of the elderly. «The LDF government is implementing policies that wholeheartedly embrace senior citizens. Kerala, which ranks first in the country in elderly welfare, is setting another example in this field. »To strengthen the initiatives launched for senior citizens since the previous government's tenure, the state is now establishing the country's first-ever Senior Citizens Commission. As a step towards this, the Kerala Legislative Assembly passed the Kerala State Senior Citizens Commission Bill yesterday (Wednesday)," Vijayan said in a Facebook post. He said that with the establishment of this commission, «we will be able to ensure the rehabilitation, security, and welfare» of senior citizens more effectively. «The commission will prioritise addressing the hardships faced by the elderly, including neglect, exploitation, and loneliness. It will be responsible for providing the necessary guidelines to tackle these issues,» Vijayan said.

Should you stop investing in PPF, SSY, NPS when switching to the new tax regime?
new tax regime has become even more alluring after the personal income tax amendments in Budget 2025. However, this shift comes with a price — the inability to claim deductions on investments that save taxes. For investors who primarily invested in Section 80C instruments to avail tax benefits, the shift to the new tax regime presents an important dilemma—should they continue with these investments or discontinue them altogether? While the new tax regime eliminates the advantage of deductions, discontinuing certain investments like Public Provident Fund (PPF), Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), and National Pension System (NPS) without careful consideration can have unintended consequences. Up to code: Softserv Solutions is changing the game for Indian IT subcontractors
A whole lot of chutzpah, leaps of faith, and a dash of putting yourself out there. You wouldn’t know from Manoj Pipersania’s demeanour that he’s painfully shy. Over a virtual call from Jaipur, the 46-year-old Founder and CEO of Softserv Solutions talks animatedly about everything from being visible for the sake of his employees (more on that later) to his penchant for shooting and getting a pilot’s licence. Softserv Solutions is more than a template IT firm specialising in business automation. Established as a private limited company in 2012, the company also offers tailored barcode solutions for use cases such as warehousing, clinical research, and RFID tagging for jewellery and other products. Its 20,000 sq ft headquarters in Jaipur belies the fact that Softserv is a micro enterprise employing just over 60 people. As Pipersania puts it, “We are the richest company in the world.” And scale has little to do with it. Pipersania started out in the early aughts as a CCNA (short for Cisco Certified Network Associate) IT specialist who configured ATMs for state-run Bank of Baroda before moving to Nepal to automate financial processes for a cooperative bank in the country. Running on just three hours of sleep a night, he’d write programmes and shop them to local businesses that needed to automate their processes. Thereon, he hopscotched from one job to another across countries — in India for Electronic Data Systems, now an HP subsidiary, then the US’ largest health insurer, UnitedHealth Group.

Chuck Schumer in the line of fire as Democrats revolt against him, leaders ask Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to primary him
The bill, passed by the House with rare GOP unity, funds the government until September but omits safeguards against Trump’s unilateral agency closures and budget slashing. Progressive lawmakers like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ro Khanna slammed Schumer’s pivot as a betrayal, arguing it surrenders congressional oversight and empowers Trump’s austerity agenda. The legislation mandates $1 billion cuts to Washington, DC, risking layoffs for teachers and police, while past shutdowns saw federal workers furloughed and services disrupted. Schumer defended his decision, claiming a shutdown would grant Trump unchecked authority to define “essential” operations, though critics like Sen. Chris Van Hollen argue the bill still enables executive overreach. With Democrats divided, the move highlights tensions over balancing fiscal responsibility with resisting Trump’s dismantling of federal programs, as the administration continues sidelining agencies like Social Security without congressional input.

EC to talk Aadhaar seeding for voter IDs with top officials on Tuesday
This comes amid a heightened political debate, particularly after the Trinamool Congress raised concerns about duplicate EPIC entries in West Bengal. The EC has already announced plans to eliminate duplicate voter entries within three months. However, the move to link Aadhaar with EPIC is a significant and likely contentious step forward. Currently, the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, allows electoral officers to request voters' Aadhaar numbers, but it remains voluntary and is complicated by legal and privacy concerns. The EC has successfully entered a significant number of Aadhaar numbers into its database voluntarily but has been unable to fully integrate the two systems due to privacy concerns. Despite this, the EC has consistently advocated for Aadhaar seeding as a tool to prevent duplication in the electoral roll. In 2017, the EC even filed an application in the Supreme Court to continue linking Aadhaar with voter IDs, emphasizing its role in ensuring a clean and accurate electoral roll.

Karnataka Cabinet approves amendment to KTPP Act for 4% quota for Muslim contractors in tenders
Karnataka Cabinet has given its nod for amending the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act aimed at providing 4 per cent reservation in tenders to Muslim contractors, official sources said. The Cabinet also approved the Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to provide 'B' khatas to all unauthorised rural properties, similar to the exercise being carried out in urban areas. The bill is expected to cover some 90 lakh rural properties that do not have khatas. According to the sources, the Cabinet discussed a proposal to give 4.24 acres of land belonging to the Agriculture Department in Hebbal for the International Flower Auction Bangalore (IFAB) on a rent-free basis for two years. Discussions were also held on approving financial assistance of Rs 96.77 crore for reconstruction and replacement of equipment at Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre after the January fire incident. The Cabinet discussed measures to reform the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) on Friday, the sources said.

US Senate approves funding bill hours before shutdown deadline, sending to Trump for signature
Donald Trump to be signed into law. The essentially party-line vote, 54-46, reflected gnawing Democratic angst over how to confront the Trump administration as its Department of Government Efficiency fires federal workers and dismantles operations. Democrats argued over whether to fight even risking a shutdown and fumed that Republicans drafted a measure that included little of their input, shortchanging health care, housing and other priorities. But in the end, enough of the Democratic senators decided a government shutdown would be even worse, and backed Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer's strategy to allow the bill to come forward. «A shutdown will allow DOGE to shift into overdrive,» Schumer said. «Donald Trump and Elon Musk would be free to destroy vital government services at a much faster rate.» Democrats were confronted with two painful options: allowing passage of a bill they believe gives President Donald Trump vast discretion on spending decisions or voting no and letting funding lapse. All told, 10 Democrats voted to break the party's filibuster to advance the bill to a final vote. On final passage, two Democrats supported the bill, and one Republican, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, opposed it. It funds the government for another six months.
