Death toll from Morocco earthquake rises to 2,122
earthquake struck central Morocco on Friday night, according to the latest update from the Moroccan Interior Ministry. The deaths include 1,351 people reported in the Al Haouz Province, 492 in Taroudant Province, 201 in Chichaoua, and 17 in Marrakesh, added the ministry in a press release on Sunday. Moroccan troops and emergency services were reportedly struggling to reach the most affected areas in the Atlas Mountains region, as roads leading up there were blocked by fallen boulders, Xinhua news agency reported, citing local media. Earlier in the day, Marrakesh's residents told reporters that aftershocks could still be felt. According to the World Health Organization estimates, the disaster has affected more than 300,000 people in the ancient old city and its outskirts. The number of casualties is expected to rise. The Moroccan Red Crescent (MRC) has said the situation on the ground posed a vast challenge to search and rescue efforts, and «getting heavy machinery into those remote areas of the Atlas Mountains to help with that is a priority». As more people were being pulled out of the rubble, the MRC and other first responders were working around the clock to identify and prioritize the most severe cases, the MRC said in a statement. The earthquake hit Morocco Friday at 11:11 p.m.

Real estate leasing companies in a fix over blocked credit eligibility
If a developer constructs a commercial building and sells it before obtaining an occupancy certificate, they may be eligible to claim credit, provided they pay the output GST on the sale transaction. However, if the developer uses the building for leasing, such an ITC is not available for set-off. «This impacts the overall business as this increases the cost of construction, thereby increasing rentals. Multiple representations have been sent to the government, but developers have yet to get any relief.

The G20 summit has been a resounding success for India
G20 summit was a blockbuster — no two ways about it. India managed to forge consensus, produce a clean communique, announce a mega connectivity project linking different worlds and welcome the African Union (AU) as a new member. Broad message to those creating an alternate order: the wait time got longer. G20 as a group of both rich and developing countries, established and emerging markets, can work together when it wants to, and listen and learn when it wants to — especially when the wolf is at the door.

Tough task ahead to make WTO's dispute settlement system fully functional: Experts
World Trade Organization will have a tough task ahead to make WTO's dispute settlement system fully functional by 2024 due to divergent approaches proposed by countries like China, and the European Union, experts say. On September 9, G20 leaders expressed their commitment to conducting discussions for having a fully and well-functioning dispute settlement system of WTO by 2024. Besides formulating norms for global exports and imports, the Geneva-based 164-member multi-lateral body adjudicates trade disputes among the member countries. The dispute settlement mechanism of WTO has been derailed due to a non-functional appellate body since December 2019. «We reiterate the need to pursue WTO reform to improve all its functions through an inclusive member-driven process, and remain committed to conducting discussions with a view to having a fully and well-functioning dispute settlement system accessible to all members by 2024, » the G20 declaration has said. Trade experts said that all the members would have to work together to achieve this 2024 goal. «G20 members have agreed to pursue WTO reforms, specifically aiming for a functional dispute settlement system accessible to all members by 2024.

US, Russia praise G20 summit declaration as meeting heads to close
Russia and the U.S. both praised a G20 summit declaration that stopped short of directly criticising Moscow for the war in Ukraine as the bloc's leaders headed into the final day of deliberations on Sunday. The world's biggest economies adopted a consensus declaration in New Delhi on Saturday that avoided condemning Russia for the war but highlighted the human suffering the conflict had caused and called on all states not to use force to grab territory. «Everything was reflected in a balanced form,» Svetlana Lukash, the Russian G20 sherpa, or government negotiator, was quoted as saying by Russian news agency Interfax. «All members of the G20 have agreed to act as one in the interests of peace, security and conflict resolution around the world.» White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters the declaration «does a very good job of standing up for the principle that states cannot use force to seek territorial acquisition or to violate the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of other states». Germany and Britain have also praised the resolution but Ukraine has said «it was nothing to be proud of».CATCH ALL LIVE UPDATES OF G20 SUMMIT HERE In the weeks leading to the summit, sharply differing views on the war had threatened to derail the meeting, with the West demanding members call out Moscow for the invasion and Russia saying it would block any resolution that did not reflect its position. The summit also admitted the African Union which includes 55 member states, as a permanent member of the G20. On Sunday, the leaders, including U.S.

India's leadership key to agreeing G20 summit message, EU official says
India's strong leadership made it possible for G20 leaders to reach consensus in intense discussions on a summit message urging nations to shun use of force in territorial disputes, a senior European Union official said on Sunday. For weeks before the New Delhi meeting, the bloc struggled to agree on a reference to the Ukraine conflict, with the West pressing for Moscow to be called out for its invasion, while Russia vowed to block any resolution not reflecting its views. "(The) Indian presidency has been very strong and after intense negotiations, the unanimous outcome was quite productive," said the official, who was aware of the G20 talks, but sought anonymity. «Without India's leadership it would not have been possible,» he added, referring to the summit declaration. The declaration adopted by the Group of 20 on Saturday, when it began the two-day summit, avoided condemning Russia for the war in Ukraine but urged all states not to use force to grab territory. The bloc's leaders also called for implementation of the Black Sea initiative for the safe flow of grain, food and fertiliser from Ukraine and Russia. The EU official, however, said there was not a single word on the Black Sea grain deal from Russia, which finds itself more isolated after the summit. «Russia should have participated, with President Putin sitting down at the table and listening to the criticism from European and global leaders,» the official said, adding, «But he has chosen not to come and participate.» The official said, «The European Union leadership made the points very strongly during the session.
