Capex on developing oilfields to drop below $3.5 billion in 2030
India's annual capital spending on developing oilfields will fall from next year, shrinking by about a fifth by 2030 in the absence of major discoveries, which will lead to a drop in domestic oil production and expand dependence on imports, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Capital expenditure on developing oil projects is estimated to drop below $3.5 billion in 2030 from around $4.3 billion in 2024. The estimates are based on the current pipeline of upstream projects, said Toril Bosoni, the head of oil markets at IEA. «It's possible that there will be finds, and new project developments will come online, but most of the time, the lag between discovery and production is beyond this time frame,» said Bosoni, referring to the IEA study which factors in capacity till 2030.

Pakistan: Imran Khan's supporters block highways to protest results
Pakistan's imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan and members of other political parties blocked key highways and started a daylong strike in the volatile southwest Monday to protest alleged rigging of last week's elections. Candidates backed by Khan won more seats than the political parties who ousted him from power nearly two years ago, according to the final tally published Sunday. However, no party won a majority, so the parties will have to hold talks on forming a coalition government. While election winners were celebrating victory, PTI and other parties refused to accept their defeat in dozens of constituencies. Dozens of Khan's supporters were briefly detained in the eastern city of Lahore over the weekend while protesting alleged vote-rigging.

Mint Primer: From Europe to India, why are farmers angry?
Mint explains: Beginning January, farmers from several member-nations of the European Union (EU)—Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Spain—invaded cities with their tractors, burning tyres, dumping manure, raiding supermarkets, blocking access to ports and highways and choking city centres. They are protesting subsidy cuts, high energy prices, cheap grain imports from Ukraine, beef imports from Latin America, growing clout of big agribusiness and climate policies limiting the use of chemical inputs. It is a profitability crisis—due to higher farming costs and low produce prices.

Do not create border 'between Punjab and India': Mann on barbed wire, nails laid by Haryana govt
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday accused the Haryana government of creating a border «between Punjab and India», referring to the concrete blocks, nails and barbed wire placed on some roads to scuttle the farmers' proposed 'Delhi Chalo' march. He said the Manohar Khattar-led Haryana government has placed as much barbed wire at the state's borders with Punjab as there is at the country's border with Pakistan. Khattar, however, justified the steps taken by his government to seal the state's borders and stop Punjab farmers from marching towards the national capital, saying the arrangements are aimed at maintaining law and order. Haryana authorities have sealed the state's border with Punjab at Shambhu near Ambala district, placing concrete blocks, sandbags, barbed wire and anti-riot vehicles on the roads going towards Delhi. Elaborate arrangements have been made at the state's borders with Punjab in Jind and Fatehabad districts as well.

Ahead of farmers protest, here are some of the orders issued in northeast Delhi
Section 144 prohibits mass meetings, and in response to the farmers' 'Delhi Chalo March' on February 13, prohibitive orders were placed in the national capital's northeast region on Sunday, according to an official. On Tuesday, thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are anticipated to march in support of the Delhi Chalo March, which is being organized by about 200 farmer unions, in the direction of the nation's capital. Section 144 of the CrPC (prohibitory orders) has been enforced. We have learned that certain farmer organizations have called on their followers to rally or march to Delhi on February 13th in favor of their demands for an MSP bill. Joy Tirkey, the deputy commissioner of police for the northeast, has issued an order saying that no one will be permitted to violate the state of law and order.

Congress govt in Gujarat included PM Modi's caste in OBC list in 1994: Amit Shah
Amit Shah on Saturday said it is very unfortunate that there is a debate on the caste of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has a habit of telling lies publicly and repeating those thereafter. Shah also said it was a Congress government in Gujarat that included Modi's caste in the list of Other Backward Classes (OBC) in 1994 and the Centre included the prime minister's caste in its OBC list in 2000. «Modi's caste was listed in Gujarat as OBC on July 25, 1994. At that time, the chief minister of Gujarat was Chhabildas Mehta and the party in power was the Congress. Till that time, Modi had not contested a single election. He used to work for the organisation only. The question of his caste did not come at all. »Subsequently, the Gujarat government recommended for the inclusion of his caste in the central OBC list. It was finally included in the central OBC list in 2000. At that time also, Modi was not in a position of power — not an MP, not an MLA nor even a sarpanch. He became the chief minister in 2001. These people have a habit of distorting facts," Shah said at the ET NOW Global Business Summit 2024 here.
