Boeing’s teary CEO pulled off a delicate balance in his contrition
Boeing Chief Executive Officer Dave Calhoun got emotional at an all-hands meeting as he described the hole blown into the side of one of his company’s planes. I admit to being sceptical when I first read about his public display of feelings. “Oh, come on," I thought, “Just fix the planes." Then I watched the video.

Boeing's latest MAX problem creates more headache for airlines
Boeing jets have rekindled frustration among airlines over the planemaker's struggle to contain a series of safety and supply crises, industry officials and experts said. Alaska Airlines, which operated Friday's domestic U.S. flight, and United Airlines together have 70% of the MAX 9 fleet and have canceled hundreds of flights.

Alaska Airlines cancels flights on certain Boeing planes through Saturday for mandatory inspections
Alaska Airlines is canceling through Saturday all flights on Boeing 737 Max 9 planes like the one that suffered an in-flight blowout of a fuselage panel last week as it waits for new instructions from Boeing and federal officials on how to inspect the fleet. The development came as signs indicate some travelers might try to avoid flying on Max 9 jetliners — at least temporarily.

Boeing seems unable to keep up with its rival Airbus
When Boeing was building a seemingly unassailable position in commercial aviation in the 1960s and 70s, passengers’ faith in its relentless focus on quality inspired the slogan “If it ain’t Boeing, I ain’t going." After the latest calamity to befall the company—the in-flight blowout of a 737 Max door plug of a plane operated by Alaska Airlines that fortunately wasn’t fatal, unlike the two crashes involving 737 Max jets in 2018 and 2019— aviation needs a new catchphrase that encapsulates Boeing’s shattered safety reputation and the ascendance of its sole big rival. This flier suggests, “If it ain’t Airbus, the regular bus will do just fine." In the wake of the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines disasters, I wrote that the Airbus-Boeing duopoly had become “extremely unbalanced." At this point, I’m running out of hyperbole to describe the starkly diverging fortunes of the two aircraft makers.

Boeing CEO admits mistake in 737 address
Boeing chief executive officer Dave Calhoun fought back tears as he said the planemaker must own up to its shortcomings as it grapples with a safety incident that has renewed questions over the quality of its manufacturing. «We're going to approach this — No. 1 — acknowledging our mistake,» Calhoun told Boeing employees Tuesday during a companywide meeting at its 737 aircraft factory near Seattle. «We're going to approach it with 100% and complete transparency every step of the way.»

Mint Explainer: How have regulators and airlines responded to the Boeing crisis?
New Delhi: American aircraft manufacturer Boeing is under scrutiny once again for its 737 MAX aircraft after part of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max-9's fuselage blew out in midair on 5 January, forcing an emergency landing. India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) immediately ordered three Indian airlines to conduct a one-time inspection of emergency exits on all their Boeing 737 Max-8 aircraft out. On Monday, Boeing shared instructions with airlines for inspecting their 737 Max-9 aircraft, after US regulators grounded 171 such planes because of the Alaska Airlines incident.

Flight safety: 737 Max testing is vital
Safety checks on 39 of the 40 Boeing 737 Max aircraft being flown in India have revealed a “missing washer" in one, according to the country’s aviation regulator. All the rest were found to be in order, while the inspection of one plane was still underway. Needless to say, rectification measures have been taken.

Alaska incident: FAA grounds all Boeing 737 Max 9 planes
AFP reported. Speaking to employees at a safety meeting called after Friday's emergency landing, Calhoun said, “We're going to approach this (by) number one acknowledging our mistake." The attempt to get the 737 Max 9 back in the air was delayed on Tuesday when federal regulators ordered Boeing to change its guidelines for how airlines should inspect the aircraft. This was due to a part in one of the planes blowing out during a flight late last week.
