COST FIVE Election Highways community chess NOT Lok Sabha election: After Maratha stir, BJP's Raosaheb Danve may not have it easy this time
BJP MP Lok Sabha Raosaheb Danve from Jalna, the epicentre of the Maratha protests, is battling anti-incumbency and anger from the Maratha community. Although Danve is a Maratha, his community is miffed with the BJP as it blames the party for not including the community in the OBC category for reservation in jobs and education. The Maratha protests had its epicentre in Jalna where Maratha leader Manoj Jarange Patil first began his indefinite fast from Antarvali Sarati village demanding that the Maratha community be included in the OBC category. Danve's victory over the last two elections over his Congress rival Vilas Autade has been more than 2.5-3 lakh. But this time, there could be a tough contest. For starters, the Congress has dropped Autade and given the ticket to Kalyan Kale who contested against Danve in 2009 and lost. Danve's victory against Kale was by a margin of just 8,482 votes. Kale was a two-term MLA from Phulambri assembly constituency.

Dommaraju Gukesh is tired. After three weeks of gruelling chess that ended in him becoming the youngest ever Candidates champion, all he wants to do is rest. But ever since he returned home after winning the Candidates – the second most-important chess tournament after the World Championship – celebrations haven’t stopped. Once that happens, I think the realisation will sink in. I haven’t really had time to process things yet. When your father came running to give you the news, what was it like? Can you relive the moment once please? I was watching the Fabi-Nepo (Fabiano Caruana vs Ian Nepomniachtchi) match for a while and at one point I got really nervous. So, I stepped outside for a walk with (Polish grandmaster and Gukesh’s trainer Grzegorz) Gajewski. We were chatting when my father came running and said that I had won. It is difficult to describe the moment in words. We were laughing, hugging each other, screaming and doing all sorts of thing. It was the most beautiful moment in my three weeks in Toronto.

IBM blues Equality rights chess Rushdie over AI, for the time being
Salman Rushdie weighing in on AI's capability to write quality fiction is like Garry Kasparov sharing his views on the technology's ability to play chess — which the grandmaster did with fury after being beaten by IBM supercomputer Deep Blue in 1997: it wasn't the machine that was great, but he who had cracked under pressure. Rushdie's take this week in an article for a French literary journal was more measured, but equally derisive. Testing OpenAI's ChatGPT, the veritable writer described the LLM having 'no originality' and 'completely devoid of any sense of humour', a key yardstick of quality in 'serious' literature. While a Rushdie-ChatGPT contest is not the same as a Kasparov-Deep Blue one — no one wins or loses in something as subjective as literature — the writer is both right and wrong.
