US elections 2024: Why Americans vote on first Tuesday of November
The act of voting on the first Tuesday that follows a Monday in November is a tradition that dates back almost 180 years. Back in the time, states had a window of 34 days for the citizens to vote and had to be done by the first Wednesday in December. But this created problems. But then it was contended that states that held elections early could potentially influence/sway the opinion of states that voted later.

PM Modi apologizes to elderly people aged 70 and above in Delhi and West Bengal. Here's why
Narendra Modi Tuesday hit out at Delhi and West Bengal governments for not implementing the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme out of «political interests» and said he was pained that the elderly from these two states cannot avail free treatment under the expanded programme. The prime minister on Tuesday extended his government's flagship health insurance scheme Ayushman Bharat to all senior citizens aged 70 years and above. «I apologise to all the elderly aged above 70 years of Delhi and West Bengal that I cannot serve them. I would get to know about your pains and sufferings but I won't be able to help you,» Modi said. «The reason is that the state governments are not implementing the scheme due to their political interests,» he said.

“Stop, Think, Act” against digital arrest: PM Modi shares Mann ki Baat on cyber crimes
Narendra Modi on Sunday appealed to citizens in his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ broadcast to be wary while sharing steps that they should take to deal with the issue. Modi said several people had asked him to speak on Digital Arrest, the term used for the cyber fraud menace where fraudsters make calls impersonating police personnel, or sleuths from CBI or Narcotics Control Bureau and at times the Reserve Bank of India to get information from unsuspecting people. The PM underlined that it is very important for people to understand this “dangerous game” and the modus operandi of the gangs. “The First Move is that they collect all of your personal information… ‘You went to Goa last month, didn’t you? Your daughter studies in Delhi, right’? They collect so much information about you that you will be surprised,” he said.

Every drop of blood spilled will be avenged: J&K LG on recent terror attacks
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said every drop of innocent blood spilled in the valley will be avenged and all capabilities will be used to dismantle the terror ecosystem. Addressing the passing out-cum-attestation parade of the Border Security Force (BSF) at the STC, Humhama here, Sinha said Pakistan has persisted with its unholy action of carrying out terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir. «Unfortunately, we have a neighbour who since the time of independence has continuously engaged in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Despite the poverty and hunger afflicting its citizens, it persists with its unholy actions of supporting terrorism and trafficking narcotics,» he said. Referring to recent terror attacks in Ganderbal and Baramulla districts, the LG said the terrorists targeted «our brave soldiers, civilians, workers involved in infrastructure projects and some labourers who had come from other places».

BJP accuses Priyanka Gandhi of not disclosing full info about her, Vadra's assets
BJP on Saturday accused Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of «non-disclosure of essential information» regarding her and her husband Robert Vadra's assets in her affidavit to contest the Lok Sabha by-poll from Kerala's Wayanad. BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia claimed that Gandhi is in violation of the Supreme Court's directive to poll candidates to make a full disclosure of their, their spouse's and dependents' assets. «The Supreme Court order is binding on all citizens. The Gandhi family is not above law. There can be only one outcome. If somebody furnishes wrong information in the affidavit, they have no right to contest elections,» Bhatia told reporters here.

Ratan Tata's ₹10,000 crore will explained: Between siblings, Shantanu Naidu and dog Tito, who gets what?
Ratan Tata, who passed away on October 9 at the age of 86, left a profound legacy not only in business but also in his personal life, particularly regarding his beloved German Shepherd, Tito. In his will, Tata made provisions for «unlimited care» for Tito, ensuring that his long-time cook, Rajan Shaw, will take care of the dog. Tata adopted Tito roughly six years ago, following the death of his previous dog. This heartfelt gesture reflects Tata's well-documented love for dogs and his commitment to animal welfare. He was an active advocate for stray dog care and devoted significant time to finding homes for abandoned petsestimated to exceed ₹10,000 crore, allocates wealth among several beneficiaries, including his brother Jimmy Tata, half-sisters Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, and his dedicated household staff. India's DPI figures in global conversations around inclusive, scalable infrastructure: Experts
Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) is now part of global conversations around inclusive and scalable infrastructure, and its blueprint can offer others an opportunity to harness technology for improving the lives of citizens, according to experts. Primus Partners, in association with iSPIRT, organised a DPI roundtable that saw key stakeholders such as senior bureaucrats, diplomats, policymakers, industry leaders and thought leaders discussing India's leadership in advancing DPI and its crucial role in driving socio-economic transformation. Delivering keynote address, G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant noted India's remarkable leap in becoming the voice of the Global South in DPI, and in achieving in 9 years what would have taken 50 years, otherwise. «This sentiment was echoed during India's G20 Presidency, where countries reached a common consensus that DPIs are essential for equitable development and to improve the lives of citizens, especially in the global south,» he said.

SERA democratises space research, Indian citizen among six crew members to conduct experiments
biomedical experiments to study the effects of microgravity on human physiology, cell biology, and fluid dynamics in space and help discover crucial information for future space missions. The US-based Space Exploration & Research Agency (SERA) on Friday announced that it has partnered with Weill Cornell Medicine and the University of Austin (UATX)-- institutions that predominantly work in space research– for the upcoming Blue Origin mission, founded by Jeff Bezos. New Shepard – a reusable suborbital rocket – has plans to fly six astronauts on an 11-minute journey past the Kármán line (100 km), the internationally recognised boundary of space. The dates of the mission are yet to be made public. Earlier in July, the agency partnered with Blue Origin to secure six seats on the New Shepard rocket–of which India is a partner nation. Five seats are reserved for nations with few or no astronauts, while the sixth is open to anyone from a partner nation. Anyone can apply and will be based on public voting.
