U.S. retail sales increased by 0.6% in August, more than the expected 0.2% rise, boosted by higher gasoline prices while weekly initial jobless claims rose to 220,000 but were below the 225,000 forecast. Rising gasoline prices also affected the latest inflation data, as the producer price index for final demand rose by 0.7% last month, the most in more than a year, and higher than the 0.4% estimate. The dollar index was last up 0.5% at 105.18, just off the 105.31 level hit earlier in the day, its highest since March 10. The euro slumped against the dollar after ECB raised its key interest rate to a record high of 4% on Thursday but indicated this was likely to be its final move in a more than year-long fight against inflation as the euro zone economy continues to stagger.

But despite making significant progress, inflation remains above the Fed's long-term target of two percent. Meanwhile, the US jobs market has shown growing signs of softening in recent months, a key precondition for the Fed to contemplate an end to its cycle of monetary tightening. «That was a helluva good week of data we got last week, and the key thing out of it is it's going to allow us to proceed carefully,» Fed governor Christopher Waller said in an interview with CNBC, referring in part to last week's jobs data. «There’s nothing that is saying we need to do anything imminent any time soon, so we can just sit there, wait for the data, see if things continue,» he added. Waller's comments follow a similarly cautious view to Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who told the Jackson Hole economic symposium in Wyoming at the end of August that the Fed would proceed «carefully» from now on. Investors and analysts overwhelmingly expect the Fed to pause its hiking cycle at its next rate-setting meeting on September 19-20, while keeping the prospect of another hike later in the year alive. Futures traders currently put the probability of a rate pause in September at 95 percent, and the chance of another hike in November at around 40 percent, according to data from CME Group. On Tuesday Waller indicated the Fed should keep its options open in the months ahead. «I don’t think one more hike would necessarily throw the economy into a recession if we did feel we needed to do one,» he told CNBC.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) introduced its Bitcoin (BTC) futures contract in December 2017. CME Group, a leading global derivatives marketplace, in collaboration with CF Benchmarks, a prominent provider of cryptocurrency benchmark indices, has announced the launch of two new APAC-specific reference rates for Bitcoin and Ether. These rates, named the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate APAC (BRRAP) and CME CF Ether-Dollar Reference Rate APAC (ETHUSD_AP), are set to be introduced on September 11. They will offer a daily reference rate for the U.S. dollar value of these two digital assets, with the publication time slated for 4 p.m. Hong Kong/Singapore time.

Grayscale Investments is a big boost for the cryptocurrency industry's decade-long effort to launch an exchange-traded fund that tracks bitcoin, even if it does not immediately open the floodgates for such products. A three-judge panel of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals in Washington on Tuesday ruled that the Securities and Exchange Commission was wrong to reject Grayscale's proposed bitcoin ETF without explaining its reasoning, in a case that has been closely watched by the industry. The ruling requires the SEC to review Grayscale's application, meaning there is no certainty it will reach a different conclusion and greenlight the product. And the regulatory agency, which on Tuesday said it was studying the ruling, could appeal.
