SP leaders consider it their life's goal to prove every rapist, criminal innocent: Adityanath
Yogi Adityanath on Sunday alleged the opposition Samajwadi Party consider it «their life's goal to prove every rapist and criminal innocent» and asserted that it would not be possible in the state. In his address at an event at Kumarganj in Ayodhya, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working to empower women across the country through the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' drive and the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, ensuring 33 per cent reservation of women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. «On the other hand Samajwadi Party leaders are supporting those who gang-raped a doctor in Kolkata,» Adityanath said after distributing tablets and smartphones to students and appointment letters at a district-level mega employment fair and youth conference in Ayodhya. The alleged rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor while on duty at West Bengal government-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata and subsequent vandalism there has sparked nationwide protests.

West Bengal govt announces host of measures to ensure safety of women at workplaces
Kolkata: The West Bengal government announced a slew of measures to ensure the safety of women in workplaces, particularly at state-run hospitals, where they have to work on night shifts, too, including designated retiring rooms and CCTV-monitored 'safe zones'. Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Alapan Bandyopadhyay, announced the measures during a press meet here on Saturday, amid continuing protests by doctors across the state against the alleged rape and murder of a medic at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Apart from hospitals and medical colleges, hostels and other places engaging women during night shifts will now come under the ambit of a flagship programme 'Rattirer Sathi — Helpers of the Night', comprising volunteers, he said. The state government has also decided to develop a mobile application with alarm devices, which can be downloaded by women and used for communication with the respective local police stations in case of any emergency.

resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Asha Devi, the mother of Nirbhaya, described the incident as «the most unfortunate thing that has happened.» She criticised the ongoing political blame game, stating that «governments are accusing each other and holding protests instead of focusing on the case, women's safety, and addressing shortcomings in the law.» In a video message, Asha Devi criticised the West Bengal Chief Minister, questioning why she was protesting and demanding capital punishment despite having authority over the health ministry, police, and the legal system.

When a ghastly crime becomes fodder for ‘Khela hobey’ politics, it’s changing time
West Bengal administration has proceeded with the horrific case. Last Friday, when Di's body was discovered, authorities of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College & Hospital tried to pass off the murder as suicide to the victim's family. The police initially did the same. After all, why on Earth would a state-affiliated institution's authorities lie? Trying to pass off homicide as suicide is SOP if you want to put a lid on things. Self-sexual assault — self-rape — is, however, far more difficult to spin. So, a case of rape-murder it has officially become.

Why NASCAR teams are hiring former college athletes
race cars, the whizzing of air guns screwing in lug nuts, the slinging of 50-pound wheels. For a South Carolina native like the 24-year-old Twitty, the cacophonous scene was just this side of paradise. «I'm ready to make this my home,» Twitty said. He was one of 55 recruits who attended the annual pit crew combine for Hendrick Motorsports. The auto racing team's coaches and trainers use the all-day event in June — and a smaller, three-day minicamp held last week — to find a half-dozen or so athletes capable of jumping onto a track, gassing a car and changing tires in less than 10 seconds. Twitty, a former running back at the University of South Carolina, was in attendance because Hendrick and other teams have learned that former football players often make the best prospects for five-man crews, thanks to their strength, agility and speed. So teams scour college campuses looking for players like Twitty who didn't catch on with an NFL team and want to trade their football helmets for fireproof suits. A few, like Twitty, know about NASCAR — he grew up rooting for driver Denny Hamlin — but most are new to the sport and can barely change the oil on their own cars.
