The science behind the powerful earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand
Sagaing region near the Myanmar city of Mandalay caused extensive damage in that country and also shook neighbouring Thailand on Friday. HOW VULNERABLE IS MYANMAR TO EARTHQUAKES? Myanmar lies on the boundary between two tectonic plates and is one of the world's most seismically active countries, although large and destructive earthquakes have been relatively rare in the Sagaing region. «The plate boundary between the India Plate and Eurasia Plate runs approximately north-south, cutting through the middle of the country,» said Joanna Faure Walker, a professor and earthquake expert at University College London. She said the plates move past each other horizontally at different speeds. While this causes «strike slip» quakes that are normally less powerful than those seen in «subduction zones» like Sumatra, where one plate slides under another, they can still reach magnitudes of 7 to 8.

'Policing towards Orwellian': On Meerut Police's passport cancellation warning for Namaz violators, NDA minister takes a dig
Meerut Police issued a directive concerning this year’s Eid namaz, imposing strict restrictions on where it can be performed. The police stated that the prayers would be limited to designated locations such as nearby mosques and the ground at Faiz-e-Aam Inter College. This decision is part of a broader crackdown aimed at curbing the practice of offering namaz on public streets, which had been a point of contention last year. Meerut's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ayush Vikram Singh, warned that any violations would lead to immediate legal consequences. «Violators will face immediate legal action, including FIRs and potential arrests. We will also initiate proceedings to cancel their passport and driving license,» Singh said. The police have implemented an extensive security plan to ensure that the restrictions are followed, involving drones, video surveillance, and the deployment of forces such as the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) in key areas of the city. Singh also referred to last year's incidents, noting that over 200 worshippers had been registered in cases for offering namaz on public streets.

US may bar foreign students from colleges linked to pro-Palestinian protests
Trump administration is considering measures to prohibit some colleges from enrolling any foreign students if they are deemed «pro-Hamas,» according to senior officials from the Justice and State Departments. The move, which could involve grand jury subpoenas, marks a further expansion of the administration’s immigration policies and efforts to counter antisemitism, though civil rights groups argue it suppresses free speech. Policy background The proposal stems from the «Catch and Revoke» program, an initiative led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Initially targeting foreign students allegedly involved in pro-Palestinian protests, the program has resulted in over 300 student visa cancellations in three weeks. Officials state that the government is scrutinizing universities with a significant number of foreign students engaging in demonstrations, which could lead to decertification from the Student and Exchange Visitor Program.

Trump warns these universities over antisemitic discrimination against Jewish students. Check details
Muhlenberg College learned in January 2024 — as pro-Palestinian protests were sweeping campuses across the United States — that it was under investigation for discriminating against Jewish students, the small liberal arts institution in Pennsylvania took action. The college fired a tenured professor who had been accused of targeting Jewish students, and the U.S. Education Department, satisfied with Muhlenberg's response to complaints of antisemitism on campus, ended its investigation. So Muhlenberg's inclusion on a list of 60 universities and colleges under investigation by the Education Department for antisemitism was «not anticipated,» Todd Lineburger, a spokesperson for Muhlenberg, said. «To our knowledge, Muhlenberg is not on the DOE list of institutions with open investigations,» Lineburger said. «We have received no further information from the Department of Education and continue our robust efforts to remain fully compliant with all laws and regulations.» The March 10 letter to 60 institutions, signed by the Education Department's acting civil rights chief Craig Trainor, focused on antisemitic activity following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel. It warned that Donald Trump's administration would not tolerate antisemitic acts — and institutions that did risked losing federal government funding.

Netflix's Reed Hastings gives $50 million to Bowdoin for AI program
Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings wants more researchers and students to ask deep questions about artificial intelligence and its potential to upend human norms. To that end, Hastings has donated $50 million to Bowdoin College, his alma mater, to create a research initiative on «AI and Humanity» — the largest gift to the liberal arts college in Maine since its founding in 1794, the school announced Monday. The aim of the program, Hastings and school officials said, is to make Bowdoin a mecca for studying the risks and consequences of AI. The initiative also aims to help prepare students to grapple with emerging technologies that can manufacture humanlike texts and even produce formulas for potential new drug compounds.
