Closed circuit not for open societies: Why transparency is important in establishing a healthy legal system
Transparency is key to creating an equitable, healthy and responsive legal system. CJI D Y Chandrachud and other senior justices of Supreme Court highlighted this well-established principle again, emphasising social media's active role in monitoring and amplifying courtroom proceedings. It also ensures that judicial commentary aligns with the decorum expected in courts of law. This comment came in the wake of the recent controversy sparked by certain 'gratuitous' comments made by Justice V Srishananda of Karnataka High Court against a woman advocate. Advocates Association of Bengaluru also had demanded a temporary stop on livestreaming of high court proceedings.

Can we expect an across-the-board bounce-back in PSUs? Deven Choksey answers
Deven Choksey, MD, DRChoksey FinServ Pvt. Ltd, says there is a case for some amount of bounce back from the technical point of view itself if I have to put it across. Still, at this point of time while we are talking, given the kind of last quarter's commentary which has come from most of these companies, their growth average is not going to be more than 15% to 20% on a year-over-year basis. One would like to buy PSU stocks, but at a corrected price with the time correction along with it. What is your take on the PSUs, given the bit of a rebound from the lows yesterday? Of course, this sector was at the forefront. Are we likely to see some sort of a synchronized rebound or is it going to be very stock-specific? Deven Choksey: I believe that the PSU companies have mostly given a significant amount of price correction. So, certainly, it was across-the-board in many of the cases where we saw the fall, be it in the capital goods segment, be it in the metal commodity space, be it in the engineering space or for that matter any other areas in which the ship building, defence, etc. Each and every one of them have given significant price corrections.

These 3 sectors will shine in coming festive season: Mayuresh Joshi
Mayuresh Joshi, Head Equity, Marketsmith India, says with the wedding season expected to be in full-blown proportion along with the festivities in the next few weeks and months, apparel makers might be something to watch out for. There have been humongous moves in Trent, Aditya Birla Fashion and Raymond Lifestyle as well as Manyavar are expected to do well as well. Gold and jewellery stocks have done reasonably well. But from a discretionary spending perspective, these QSR players should come back strongly as well. Apparel makers, jewellery counters, and QSR, are good spaces for consumption spending. Is it time to relook at PSUs or is it too early for that? How should one look at the entire PSU pack at the moment? Mayuresh Joshi: When you are talking about the PSU pack, there are a whole host of sectors that get covered. So, within the sectors, obviously, how upstream companies will perform will depend on crude pricing primarily. Downstream companies, again, dependent a large portion in terms of how GRM margins will get spread out, what probably happens in terms of crude pricing as well and the transmission volumes thereof in lieu of expected demand.

Sorry, the Fed can’t save us from a bear market
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Wall Street commentary around this week’s Fed rate cut could have filled a very long and boring book, but much of what you need to know about its effect on the stock market can be found in a movie rarely linked with monetary policy: “The Wizard of Oz." The great and powerful man behind the central bank curtain, Jerome Powell, really can’t do as much as people think to keep their portfolios from shriveling if the wheels are already starting to come off the economy. Stocks’ initial reaction to Wednesday’s cut was exuberant.

IT stocks close to peak multiples; a stock-selective approach is better: Apurva Prasad
Apurva Prasad, Vice President, HDFC Securities, says IT companies with higher BFSI exposure, would be candidates that can potentially surprise on earnings. The other element is if you look at the guidance that the companies have provided for the year, most of the guidance does not bake in the macros recovery or macro getting better. Among mid-tier companies, the ones that continue to do relatively better versus peers would be Persistent Systems. Also, with higher BFSI exposure, names like TCS can be candidates.

Haryana polls: Congress, AAP trying to set aside individual aspirations for alliance, says Raghav Chadha
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Sunday said both Congress and his party are trying to forge an alliance for the Haryana elections by keeping aside their individual aspirations. Chadha said while the parties are yet to reach a consensus on the alliance, the talks are progressing in a «positive» direction and they are hopeful of a good outcome. He, however, added that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will not proceed with the alliance «if there is no win-win situation». «The talks are happening in a positive atmosphere. Both parties are working towards contesting the elections together, prioritizing unity and the demands of the people of Haryana, while setting aside individual party and candidate aspirations,» he told PTI Videos.

Brent crude price to be in $70 to $80-85 range in next 2-3 months: Geoff Dennis
Geoff Dennis, Independent Emerging Markets Commentator, says the Chinese economy is struggling, and there is no obvious reason why that growth rate is going to turn upward in the near term. Also, although the US economy is in reasonable shape and ought to avoid recession, the chances of an acceleration in growth in the US are relatively limited. So, he does not see a big surge in oil prices despite delay in output increase. What is your reading of OPEC Plus's decision to stall the hike in production by two months? This has had a knee-jerk reaction on crude oil prices, which were on a very slippery slope. But do you think the price rise will be sustained? Geoff Dennis: What is happening here is that they are forming the bottom end of a trading range. It was inevitable at some point that OPEC Plus would delay this output increase because there have been several factors pulling crude oil prices lower in the last few weeks, including worries about the US economy, worries about the Chinese economy, expectations that Libyan oil will come back on the market shortly – although that is not a big factor. Also, US inventories have been pretty strong.

Bond St lights up with FPI money, more to flow in after Fed rate cut
Indian government bonds has accelerated through August as decision-influencing US data and Federal Reserve commentary point toward a rate cut later this month, but are not alarming by themselves to trigger a risk-off sentiment on Wall Street and dent financial assets in the world's fastest-expanding major economy. From July 31 to August 30, the indicative value of foreign portfolio investors' aggregate holdings in fully accessible route (FAR) government bonds increased by ₹23,914 crore, or around $2.85 billion, to ₹2.29 lakh crore, an analysis of official clearing house data showed. The inflow topped the broad market expectations of around $2 billion of average monthly inflows following the inclusion of local debt in a JP Morgan index.

Hold IPO stocks with good potential for long term to maximise returns: Neeraj Dewan
«So, keeping that in mind if one gets an entry into an IPO stock, which has a good potential, it is always better rather than churning every week to hold on to the stock and make that wealth which is generated over period,» says Neeraj Dewan, Market Expert. Starting off by just maybe getting in your thoughts as well on the kind of commentary that has been made or the kind of reveal due to the SEBI study with respect to the fact that nearly 54% of the allotted IPO shares, this is excluding the anchor investors, are sold in just a week and they are talking about how we need to be a good doctor to companies, do not prescribe steroids, they say when paracetamol will suffice. Just wanted to get in your thoughts on the study reveal. Neeraj Dewan: Yes, actually there is so much of paper availability and money flow has to be rotated.

What's driving the rally in IT stocks? Abhishek Kumar answers
«The demand commentary that we hear from most of the companies is that things are stabilising. There are green shoots, especially in banking and BFSI generally is a lead indicator for the broad-based recovery in the sector,» says Abhishek Kumar, JM Financial Institutional Securities. Could you just give us a gist of what has actually been driving this kind of a rally that we are seeing in the IT Index because the EPS upgrades are not that much to support this kind of rally? Abhishek Kumar: You are right, earning upgrades have not come through yet but if we look at the last few quarters, there were earning downgrades consistently and that seems to have stopped, so that is kind of a first milestone in inflection. So, the worst seems to be behind the sector.

Both consumption or capex stocks back with a bang; look for proxy plays to defence, railways: Devang Mehta
Devang Mehta, Director-Equity Advisory, Spark Private Wealth, says a combination of sectors related to capex and consumption and certain sectors in credit growth will be a good investment portfolio if somebody has a one-and-a-half, two-year horizon. Mehta further says look into proxy plays like bearing companies for railways and defence stocks. What are you doing in the markets right now? Any fresh stocks that you have managed to recommend to your clients? Any fresh ideas? Devang Mehta: I will talk more about themes and sectors rather than ideas. I will give certain examples on the way. We feel that both sides of the market – be it consumption or capex – have come back with a bang. Post the elections, post the budget, and post this volatility that we saw a couple of weeks back during the yen carry trade, the market has gone from strength to strength. So, whichever sectors were not performing, be it FMCG companies, auto companies and even discretionary consumption companies like Titan, and Trent, have come up with a good set of numbers.

Asian stocks climb on bullish Wall Street cue: Markets wrap
Asian stocks rose, following a buoyant session on Wall Street amid bets the Federal Reserve will soon signal it’s ready to start cutting interest rates. Shares advanced in Japan, South Korea and Australia. The MSCI Asia-Pacific index headed for a third day of gains while Hong Kong futures also pointed to a rise. The advance was fueled by a bullish mood in the US, where the S&P 500 climbed for an eighth straight day — the longest winning streak this year.
