Rethink Retrofitting: Why policymakers must align projects with climate needs
From the beginning, the mood of the 'finance COP' in Azerbaijan has been far from optimistic. In the first week, Adaptation Fund head Mikko Ollikainen spoke about the 'great paradox' at the heart of the latest UNFCCC meet — the urgent calls of world leaders to safeguard vulnerable populations from worsening climate impacts, and the lack of funds to make that a reality. The UN's Adaptation Gap Report 2024: Come Hell and High Water, released on Nov 7, estimates that the adaptation finance gap stands between $187-359 bn a year. Much larger numbers are floating around in Baku. The report stresses another aspect: need to improve the design and modalities of adaptation projects to ensure that projects enhance resilience of vulnerable communities.

The game in Guyana: Why Modi visited this small Caribbean country
Guyana as President Irfan Ali broke the protocol to receive PM Modi at the airport. Both Guyana and Barbados, another small Caribbean country, will confer their highest national awards on Modi. People of Indian origin, the biggest ethnic group in Guyana, make up 43.5% of the population. There are around 3,20,000 people of Indian origin in Guyana, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which described it as «one of the oldest Indian diasporas, which migrated more than 185 years ago». «Prime Minister received a rousing and colorful welcome from the Indian community and the Indo-Guyanese diaspora in the presence of several Cabinet Ministers of Guyana,» the MEA said in a statement. However, the presence of a large Indian-origin community is not the only reason PM Modi is visiting Guyana. It may be a tiny country but it is assuming great global significance due to its huge oil reserves. Forging economic relations with smaller countries is part of Modi's agenda to bring together the Global South.

After decades of depopulation, Ollolai, like many other rural Italian communities, has been attempting to attract outsiders to help turn things around. To sweeten the deal, it has been offering to sell run-down homes for as little as one euro, or slightly more than a dollar.

Sudha Murty praises son-in-law Rishi Sunak's 'good Indian cultural values'
Sudha Murty has spoken of her pride in son-in-law Rishi Sunak, a British citizen with «good Indian cultural values» imbibed from his parents' upbringing in the UK. Murty joined Sunak and her daughter Akshata Murty as the guest of honour at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's annual Diwali gala in London on Saturday evening. The parents of the British Indian former prime minister, Usha and Yashvir Sunak, were also in the audience as Bhavan UK students showcased a variety of Indian classical music and dance forms. «I always believe when you are abroad, your parents must do two things: one is good education, which gives you wings in return and you can fly anywhere and settle; the second is great culture, your origin which is Indian origin or roots which you can get at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan along with your parents,» said Murty, delivering her keynote address.

Bengaluru: Amazon India is moving its corporate headquarters from its longtime base in the northwest part of the city to close to the city's airport as part of the e-commerce and cloud computing giant's cost-cutting exercise, a development that has disturbed the idyllic setting of the bohemian residential community. Significantly, Amazon India's plan to move out of the World Trade Centre, where it occupies nearly half a million square feet of office space across eighteen of the thirty-floor building owned by Brigade Enterprises Ltd, raises questions about how the publicly-traded real estate developer would find a new tenant and on the rental income of adjoining flats.
