King Charles heckled by lawmaker at Australian parliament
Lidia Thorpe shouted anti-colonial slogans at King Charles during his visit to the Australian parliament on Monday, shocking assembled lawmakers and other dignitaries. «Give us our land back! Give us what you stole from us!» Thorpe screamed in an almost minute-long diatribe, after the 75-year-old king's speech. «This is not your land, you are not my king,» the independent lawmaker said, decrying what she described as a «genocide» of Indigenous Australians by European settlers.

Indian Americans hesitant to vote for Harris, claims Democratic community leader
Swadesh Chatterjee has said the community is hesitant to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 election as she has not developed a base among them in her previous roles as Senator or the Attorney General of California. A Padma Bhushan awardee of 2001, the Democratic community has created the "Indian Americans for Harris" group and has been campaigning for her not only in the state of North Carolina, where he is based, but is also organising support for the vice president in other battleground states. While accepting that the community is hesitant to vote for her overwhelmingly because they do not know her well, Chatterjee said that Harris, as the Attorney General of California, did not build up an Indian American base and was not a part of any community meetings or any of their events as a Senator. «She did not have that kind of base though she is of Indian origin,» he told PTI in an interview.

Somy Ali defends Salman Khan amid Lawrence Bishnoi threats, says he owes no apology
Salman Khan’s former girlfriend Somy Ali has now come out in his support. For the unversed, the ‘Dabangg’ star has been sent several death threats by gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Ali, who dated Khan in the ‘90s was recently in the news for extending an open invitation to Bishnoi for a virtual chat on Zoom. For the unversed, Khan had sparked the ire of the Bishnoi community for allegedly killing a Blackbuck in 1998. In an interview with India Today, Ali stated that Khan was not aware of the significance of the animal to the community, so there was no need for him to apologise. “Why should he apologise for something he didn't know about? That's like doing something inadvertently, and unintentionally and being forced to apologise for it. It makes no sense. It's not about ego. People say that he (Salman) is very arrogant and he has a reputation. I have nothing to do with him or his family today. I just don't want anyone murdered, in Bollywood or Hollywood. Violence is never the answer."

India’s development pathway intertwines with ecological conservation
biodiversity talks in Cali, Colombia next week, India showcased the way its development story intertwines with ecological conservation, including the role that tribal communities play in conservation efforts. This, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, is clearly demonstrated in the “shinning success” of Project Tiger. India is home to 70 per cent of world’s wild tiger population. Speaking at the inauguration of the art exhibition ‘Silent Conversation’, organised by the National Tiger Conservation Authority and Sankala Foundation, a Delhi-based organisation focused on sustainability, Jaishankar focused on the contribution of tribal and other local communities.

Rekindle that personal connection with tradition
Lakshmi Puja on Sharad Purnima or the autumn full moon. At the turn of the 20th century, there would have hardly been a Bengali house without an evening puja for the goddess of good fortune and abundance being conducted by the matriarch of the family. It could be described as Bengal's Thanksgiving Day, asking for Ma Lakshmi to shower divine benevolence on all. Whether She is represented as a figurine or painted on a clay plate (shora), Ma Lakshmi is adorned with flowers, and alponas featuring conch shells and lotuses are drawn on the floors with rice flour paste, with the goddess's feet etched at every doorway to welcome her. Similar to the more widely known Santa story, "Kojagori" Lakshmi is supposed to come late at night to see who is still awake and bestow her blessings on them. Durga Puja became a largely community celebration by the 19th century, barring those in the homes of rajas and zamindars, but Lakshmi Puja remained a family affair till the end of the 20th century. And, importantly, it was most often woman-led. Nearly every Bengali has memories of grandmothers, aunts and mothers prepping for the evening puja, making narkel naru (coconut-jaggery ladoos), arranging fruits and flowers, keeping fasts and reciting the panchali.

Supreme Court upholds Section 6A of Citizenship Act; Assam's cut-off date debate continues
Guwahati: The dilemma of cut of date continued to linger in Assam for several decades, while the Supreme court on Thursday upheld validity of Section 6A of Citizenship Act which conferred citizenship benefits to persons from Bangladesh who settled in Assam and had entered India between January 1966 and March 25, 1971, there are documents and recommendations which stipulates 1951 as the cut of date for identification of foreigners. The All Assam Students Union (AASU), which spearheaded a six-year-long agitation against illegal immigrants in Assam in 1979-85, welcomed the Supreme Court judgment upholding the validity of Section 6A of Citizenship Act. AASU's chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharjya said with its order on Section 6A of Citizenship Act 1955, the Supreme Court has given its stamp of approval to the Assam Accord under which all those who had entered Assam illegally must be detected and deported from the country. «We wholeheartedly welcome the Supreme Court verdict. It is a historic verdict. It has established that the Assam agitation was undertaken with genuine reasons and all provisions of the Assam Accord are now legally validated by the apex court.”

Meet the tribe that still mummifies its dead and here's how they do it
Papua New Guinea, there is a tribal community that still keeps the tradition alive. The Anga tribe practices the mummification of their deceased ancestors as a way to stay connected with them. The Anga people, who number around 45,000, use a distinct method of mummification that involves smoking the body for three months. Unlike the ancient Egyptian technique, the body remains seated and is positioned over a fire. During the process, the mummifiers carefully drain the body’s fluids by poking it and use a wooden stick to widen the anus, allowing the organs to exit. The procedure is highly meticulous, with every detail attended to in order to avoid any mistakes that might bring ill omens. The dead body is then coated with red clay for preservation and placed in jungle shrines.
