financial inclusion through better coordination with government and NGOs in credit planning and promoting digital financial literacy. Observing that the role of SLBCs in fostering inclusive and sustainable growth is crucial and multifaceted, he said, it can drive significant progress in bridging the gap between financial services and the underserved populations. «By focusing on effective coordination with government and NGOs, adopting a scientific approach to credit planning, and emphasising digital financial literacy, SLBCs can create a more inclusive financial ecosystem,» he said at the Conference of Convenors of SLBCs at Pune on June 19. «As we move forward, it is essential to monitor and measure the tangible outcomes of our efforts, ensuring that the benefits of financial inclusion reach every corner of our country,» he said.

Is Modi’s policy agenda at risk in new Parliament? Here's what might now happen to some of his key plans
Modi’s vast domestic agenda is in jeopardy after his party failed to win an outright majority in parliament for the first time in a decade, forcing it to work with a coalition of parties and grapple with an expanded opposition bench. Over the past decade that Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has ruled with absolute majorities, its advocated for — and pushed through — laws that critics say have furthered its majoritarian goals. Some of the outstanding policies on that agenda may now need to be reviewed or jettisoned after the electoral setback. Signs of acrimony between the BJP-led government and the opposition were visible Monday at the start of the first parliamentary session since election results earlier this month. A united opposition — which won about 230 of the 543 seats in the lower house, the Lok Sabha — are opposing the BJP’s selection of a temporary speaker of parliament and are protesting against a brewing scandal over college entrance exams.

Tamil Nadu hooch tragedy: Nadda writes to Kharge, questions Congress' 'stoic silence'
JP Nadda on Monday wrote to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, questioning the «stoic silence» of his party on the recent hooch tragedy which left several people dead in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu hooch tragedy was entirely a «man-made disaster», Nadda said in his letter to Kharge, adding «perhaps if the deep nexus between the ruling DMK-INDI alliance dispensation and illicit liquor mafia did not exist today, 56 lives could have been saved.» Nadda said the ghastly images of burning funeral pyres from Karunapuram village in Kallakurichi in the aftermath of Tamil Nadu's «worst ever' spurious liquor consumption tragedy, that has left 56 dead until now and almost 159 persons hospitalised, has shaken the conscience of the entire nation.»

Unfortunate that acts glorifying terrorism allowed in Canada routinely: Indian High Commission
terrorism in Canada as «deplorable», India has said it was «unfortunate» that such actions are allowed to be «routine» on many occasions here when it should be condemned by all peace-loving countries and people. In a statement on the 39th anniversary of the 1985 Kanishka bombing, in which 329 persons, most of them Canadians of Indian descent, on board an Air India flight lost their lives, the Indian High Commission said that terrorism knows «no borders, nationality, or race.» The Montreal-New Delhi Air India 'Kanishka' Flight 182 exploded 45 minutes before it was to have landed at London's Heathrow Airport on June 23, 1985, killing all 329 people on board, including 86 children.

Congress upset over pro-tem speaker election, will not assist during oath-taking of MPs
BJP MP Bhratruhari Mehtab was appointed as pro-tem Speaker, instead of Congress leader K Suresh, who is an eighth-term MP, the MPs of the India bloc have decided not to sit on the speaker's chair to assist the pro-tem Speaker during the oath-taking ceremony of MPs, sources said. According to the sources, Congress and India Bloc parties are upset with the fact that tradition has been broken as Mehtab was made the Protem Speaker instead of the 8-time Congress MP K Suresh. The Congress has reacted sharply to the central government's decision to appoint Mahtab as Pro-tem Speaker of Lok Sabha over senior-most Dalit MP Kodikkunnil Suresh of Congress, saying that the appointment by the BJP deviates from the traditional practice of appointing the senior member.

Karnataka: 3 Ministers revive talk of additional Dy CM posts after Congress party’s subpar performance in LS polls
Deputy CM in Karnataka are back in the ruling Congress with three ministers talking about it openly even as the party is licking its wounds from a subpar performance in the recent Lok Sabha polls ending with just nine out of 28 seats. This has revived discussions on the subject as a few ministers had, in the run up to the polls, sought community-wise posts of Dy CM arguing that such a move would help the party electorally. The party rejecting those demands and now ending up with about half the number of seats it had targeted has given new ammunition to some community leaders. Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi, Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna and Minority Affairs Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan have at various fora, aired their opinion in public, exerting pressure on Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The first two belong to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) while Khan is a Muslim. They have sought the party to revive discussions while Khan said Muslims have desired a Dy CM post for the community.

Bhojshala survey: Sanatan Dharma idols found, says Hindu leader; Muslim side disputes claim
Hindu leader on Saturday claimed idols related to Sanatan Dharma had been found during the court mandated scientific survey of the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Masjid complex in Dhar in Madhya Pradesh, though the Muslim side in the dispute asserted these were being retrieved from a hut and must not be made part of the findings. The Madhya Pradesh High Court, on March 11, directed Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to carry out a 'scientific survey' of the Bhojshala complex, a medieval-era monument that Hindus believe is a temple of Goddess Vagdevi (Saraswati) and the Muslim community calls Kamal Maula Mosque. Saturday was the 93rd day of the survey.

Green Cards for Grads: Trump’s new vote magnet?
Trump. The former president, known for his unpredictable policies, has proposed granting Green Cards to foreign graduates. The announcement has caught the attention of many, especially within the international student community. Currently, many international students face uncertainty about their ability to remain in the US after completing their studies. A guaranteed Green Card would eliminate this worry, providing a clear path to permanent residency and potentially boosting the number of international students applying to US universities. Promises to ease immigration restrictions for students and skilled workers are not new. Over the years, various US administrations have made similar commitments, often with mixed results. For instance, the Obama administration introduced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provided temporary relief to young immigrants. However, it faced numerous legal challenges and its future remains uncertain. During his 2016 campaign, Trump promised to end the H-1B visa program, claiming it was being abused by companies to hire cheap foreign labour at the expense of American workers. This promise was popular among certain voter bases but caused significant concern among tech companies and international students who rely on these visas to work in the US after graduation. Despite his tough stance, the H-1B program remains largely unchanged, highlighting the complexities and political manoeuvring involved in immigration reform.

Govt, opposition face-off on protem Speaker issue ahead of first Lok Sabha session
Lok Sabha, the NDA government and the INDIA bloc sparred on the issue of Pro-tem Speaker with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accusing the Congress of resorting to lies and the opposition threatening to refuse to join the panel of chairpersons in the House. President Droupadi Murmu had appointed BJP leader and seven-term member Bhartruhari Mahtab as the Pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who is tasked with administering the oath and affirmation to the newly-elected members of the lower house and preside over the election of the Speaker. The President had also named five senior members — K Suresh (Congress), T R Baalu (DMK), Radha Mohan Singh and Faggan Singh Kulaste (both BJP) and Sudip Bandyopadhyay (TMC) to assist Mahtab in the process that will take place over the first three days of the Lok Sabha Session commencing on June 24. The Congress had alleged that the government has violated procedures and conventions and ignored the right of eight-term member Suresh to the post of the pro-tem Speaker, a claim dismissed as «misleading» by Rijiju.

Budget 2024: What is Dividend Distribution Tax? Know How it will abolition impact the Indian economy?
Dividend Distribution Tax (DDT) underwent significant changes in India with the abolition of DDT in the 2020-21 Budget. Traditionally, dividends are payments made by companies to shareholders from their profits. DDT, introduced in the Finance Act of 1997, was a tax levied on these dividends distributed by domestic companies, irrespective of their income tax obligations on those profits. The decision to abolish DDT marked a substantial shift in tax policy. Previously, DDT imposed a burden directly on companies, reducing the amount of dividends received by shareholders. Post-abolition, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that dividends would now be taxed in the hands of the shareholders themselves. This change aimed to streamline the taxation process, making it more transparent and aligning it with international norms where dividends are typically taxed at the individual level. The economic implications of abolishing DDT were widely anticipated. By removing this tax, Indian equities were expected to become more attractive to investors. The move was seen as potentially boosting market sentiment and encouraging companies to reinvest profits back into the economy. This reinvestment could stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities. Moreover, the abolition of DDT was expected to make India a more appealing destination for foreign investors, potentially leading to increased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
