NEET NET Result: Nearly 3.3 mn students affected as govt agency fails the test
UGC-NET exams this year. Until now, allegations of fraud and paper leaks were linked to only some state exams. An estimated 2.4 million science stream students just out of school have been trapped by allegations of exam paper leak to row over awarding grace marks related to NEET. If this was not misery enough for the student community and parents, the overnight cancellation of UGCNET for doctorate aspirants has added to their woes. Though both exams are very different in terms of career options, they are conducted by the National Testing Agency and are currently pen-paper tests. The health ministry resisted an online format for NEET, while UGC-NET successfully run as a computer-based test (CBT) since 2018 was suddenly moved to a paper-based optical mark reader (OMR) test this year, baffling many as tests do not move back from online to pen-paper mode normally.

Will challenge HC order scrapping increased quotas in Bihar: Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Thursday vowed to challenge the Patna High Court order setting aside a hike in reservation for deprived castes from 50 per cent to 65 per cent. Choudhary, who is also the state BJP president, asserted his party was «fully in support» of reservations and the state government will move the Supreme Court «after due consultations with legal experts». «It was with the BJP's full support that the Nitish Kumar government ordered the caste survey and raised quotas for Dalits, tribals and backward classes,» said Choudhary, who became deputy CM in January this year after the return of Kumar to the NDA. «We believe that the reservation laws in Bihar were amended in accordance with provisions of the Constitution… states like Tamil Nadu, too, have 69 per cent quotas,» he said.

Global IP treaty to boost innovation, help biodiversity. But some see red flags
Also read | India must learn from China's patent chase and focus on quality over quantity “The treaty could potentially attract investment to India, though several factors will influence the extent of this impact," said Jogeshwar Mishra, partner at law firm Shardul Amarchand & Mangaldas & Co. “These include providing a clearer legal framework for the use of genetic resources and traditional knowledge." The treaty would also improve market confidence, Mishra said, as it would ensure that “traditional knowledge and genetic resources are used ethically and legally, minimising the risk of legal disputes".

Australian, Canadian broadcasting corp reports on Indian 'meddling' alike
Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on "Indian spies" and the Modi government's «infiltration» in Australia has uncanny similarities with «revelations» made in the report of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) which also made similar allegations. The ABC report claimed that the Sikh diaspora and their families in India have been «coerced» by Indian authorities and that the Australian government while expanding ties with India is worried about «Indian spies» on its soil. The ABC report also refers to the Hardeep Singh Nijjar case and the Canadian government's accusation against India. «As the federal government embraces Narendra Modi and his administration as an important partner, the long arm of the Indian state is reaching Australia, silencing critics and threatening members of the diaspora… In 2020, India-Australia relations seemed better than ever. Trade deals were blossoming and a range of defence alliances were being signed in response to China's growing power in the region. In secret though, Australia was unhappy with India's spy operations in the country,» alleged the ABC report titled 'Infiltrating Australia', published on June 17.

NDA's Maha poor Lok Sabha show: NCP hits back at BJP for blaming Ajit Pawar; warns of taking 'different stand' on alliance
BJP and RSS members blaming the alliance with Ajit Pawar-led NCP for NDA's dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls, NCP has now openly criticised BJP for putting the blame on its leader and has even warned that the party would be forced to take a «different stand» on the alliance if the targeting continued. «We have come to know that BJP MLAs have blamed Ajit Pawar for the loss. I have to tell these people, if someone is deliberately targeting Ajit Pawar, then we would also have to think about taking a different stand,» warned Amol Mitkari, an NCP leader. Mitkari was reacting to claims that BJP MLAs in a review meeting have blamed BJP joining hands with Ajit for the party's election performance. Other NCP leaders blamed BJP's leaders' utterances for the party's dismal show in the state. «What has happened with the Sangh is their own issue. There has been no loss (to BJP) because of Ajit Pawar. Instead the anger against BJP might have hurt us… BJP leaders kept talking about '400 paar' and about the constitution being changed… There is a large group of backward and OBC communities that follow Ajit Pawar and we tried our best to remedy the situation but BJP has some leaders who talk as they feel like and that's why we suffered this loss,» said Rupali Patil, NCP leader from Pune.
