How to navigate and work with the household’s joint financial decisions
museum was not a good investment of time and money. He had a long walk along the river on his mind. The children were staring at the arguing parents and suggesting that they go to a theme park instead. We systematically underestimate the complexities of joint decisions in a household. Two people, who are different in many ways, come together in a marriage. We also know that children born to the same parents, growing up in the same household, end up being very different people. However, we celebrate the family as a unit, enjoy spending time together, and hope to amicably collaborate and make joint decisions. Authority works for a while. Persuasion lasts a little longer. Mostly, it is willing or unwilling compromise. When it comes to money, it is usually worse. The first idea to internalise is that we all have distinct and different money personalities. Some of us love to spend, some can’t let go of money. Some take risks, others don’t. Some obsess over the long term, others live for the now. The list is long. We may remain together as a family unit, but hold very different views about how to earn, spend, save and invest.

Sheikh Hasina’s extradition conundrum: What are India’s options?
Bangladesh must strive to keep its success story going While Bangladesh is yet to make a formal request, and India’s external affairs ministry has dismissed it as hypothetical, the issue still calls for strategic thinking in the diplomatic and foreign policy establishment. So, what are India’s options? While it may want to stand up for its long-time friend Sheikh Hasina, politics is driven by rationality and prudence, not emotions. In realpolitik, national interests trump personality-based politics.

Deposits won’t grow faster; it is time for credit growth to slow down
₹4 trillion, the RBI conducted repo auctions to inject system liquidity. Irrespective of external flows or government spending, deposit accretion levels are largely a consequence of the monetary policy stance and resultant liquidity actions. What is in banks’ control, however, is the composition of deposits between Casa (current account and savings account) deposits, retail term deposits and bulk deposits.

China manufacturing centre of world due to US outsourcing policy: Amitabh Kant
China's emergence as the manufacturing centre of the world is largely a consequence of American policy, because if you look at the top 30 companies in the United States of America, 95% to 98% of the manufacturing is outsourced to China, India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said here on Wednesday. Both the Chips Act and the Inflation Reduction Act of USA are protectionist in character. «It's important because if you want to shift towards net zero, it will be almost impossible to do it without India. And the reason for that is that green hydrogen manufacturing firm from India today is costing $4.5 per kilogram, whereas in the US, it will cost about $7-7.5 per kilogram. The extent of subsidisation will be enormous,» Kant said at an interaction with US G20 & G7 Sherpa and Deputy NSA Daleep Singh on India-USA Economic Partnership organised by the Observer Research Foundation. «If you want the world to move towards clean energy, reach the target of net zero, you want production of the lowest cost possible. And therefore, the size and scale of manufacturing from India, which India has demonstrated through procurement of LED bulbs, the prices for procurement of large scale buses, electric buses, prices for you, it needs the size and scale of a country like India to radically bring down the price to $1 per kilogram by 2030 and that capacity to do it only India has. And that's why, if you want the world to achieve success in net zero, you need to work with partners like India.»

'Like in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh': Congress warns govt over protests in Kenya against Adani's airport deal
The Congress party today said that protests in Kenya over Adani Group's proposed takeover of Nairobi airport is a matter of grave concern as it could turn into anger against India. «The proposed takeover of Nairobi airport by the Adani Group has sparked widespread protests in Kenya. The Kenya Aviation Workers Union has called for a strike to protest. This is a matter of grave concern for India, as the non-biological prime minister's friendship with Adani is now world-famous. The ongoing protests there could easily turn into anger against India and the Indian government,» Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a post on social network X (formerly Twitter).

William Watson: Canada's economic problem is too few producers
Don Wright, former head of British Columbia’s public service and deputy minister to the premier, wrote a very truething here the other day. In “creating jobs,” he wrote, governments shouldn’t forget basic math. The quotation marks are because governments don’t actually create jobs, they merely shuffle resources around, discouraging some activities with rules and taxes and encouraging others with subsidies, tax credits and so on.
