Maharashtra's sugar production fell to 5.1 million tons from 6.09 million tons, while Karnataka's production dropped 12.7% to 3.1 million tons, the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories said in a statement. Production in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh rose 14.8% to 4.61 million tons as mills started operations early there, it said. India has decided to allow mills to divert up to 1.7 million tons of sugar for ethanol production, government and industry officials said last month, as New Delhi aims to reduce disruptions in its ambitious biofuel programme. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to face elections in a few months, India, which is highly sensitive to food inflation, is likely to ban sugar exports, the first restriction on exports since 2016.

SAW on Tuesday reported an over twofold growth in its third-quarter profit, as demand in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remained steady and its order book grew. The company posted a consolidated profit after tax of 5.32 billion rupees ($64.1 million) for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2023 from 2.14 billion rupees a year ago. The company, which makes pipes for the energy, transportation and water sectors, said its order book for iron & steel pipes rose to $1.49 billion from $1.32 billion a year ago. «Higher exports, improved volumes and range-bound raw material prices have contributed towards margin improvement,» the company said in a statement. Exports accounted for over 35% of its order book, which analysts said helped offset the effect of falling domestic steel prices, as global prices remained elevated. Its UAE-based unit recorded an order book of $135 million.

Aster had earlier announced that it will separate its India and gulf businesses in a $1-billion deal. The sale is expected to be completed by the March quarter. The board of directors held a meeting earlier on Monday to discuss the progress of the transaction between Affinity Holdings and Alpha GCC Holdings for segregation of the company’s GCC business. «The Board was briefed that there has been satisfactory progress on conditions precedent for the transaction and Affinity and the buyer are aiming to complete the transaction soon,» the company said in a filing. The company will get $1.001 billion from the proposed sale, of which $903 million will be paid at closing. About $98.8 million may be received subsequently subject to certain contingent events, which includes an earnout of up to $70 million based on EBITDA achieved by the GCC business for FY24. Following deliberations regarding future expansion plans, capex requirements, cash reserves, the Board has expressed its desire to consider distribution of 70-80% of the upfront consideration of $903 million, as dividend to its shareholders.
