Employers and staff are calling a 'truce' on the return-to-office war
When video conferencing specialist Zoom Video Communications Inc. called staff back to the office last month, it was widely interpreted as the disintegration of the remote work experiment. The pro-office message, four years after the pandemic triggered a white-collar retreat, was seized on by Elon Musk, who described it as morally wrong for “laptop classes living in la-la-land” to work from home. Amazon.com Inc. is tracking attendance and emails staff who fail to attend three days a week, while Alphabet Inc.’s Google says absence will affect staff performance reviews. In the United Kingdom, banks including Lloyds Banking Group, Citigroup Inc. and HSBC Holdings PLC, have taken the September cue to tighten their in-office mandates.

India's growth to be above 6% with strong macroeconomic stability, inflation to decline: RBI MPC member Ashima Goyal
speaking on inflation and when it will come down, Ashima Goyal said, "For a long time now, firms' inflation expectations have been around 4 percent. That means, despite cost shocks, their price increases do not exceed 4 percent." Ashima Goyal stressed that core inflation is softening and the strategy of inflation targeting is teaching those who determine prices to disregard temporary disruptions in the supply chain.

Oktoberfest Now Has Its Culture War. It Isn’t About the Beer.
MUNICH—Oktoberfest is usually all about the beer. This year, it is about chicken. A decision by the Paulaner festival tent to serve all-organic hens at its marquee venue is stoking a debate between advocates of a sustainable Oktoberfest against traditionalists wary of a “Woke Wiesn"—a play on the short form of the name of the Bavarian celebration.

Why a Soft Landing Could Prove Elusive
On the eve of recessions in 1990, 2001 and 2007, many Wall Street economists proclaimed the U.S. was on the cusp of achieving a soft landing, in which interest-rate increases corralled inflation without causing a recession. Similarly, this summer’s combination of easing inflation and a cooling labor market has fueled optimism among economists and Federal Reserve officials that this elusive goal might be in reach.

Indian Navy has a Rs 2 lakh crore plan to counter Chinese dragon in Indian Ocean
Indian Navy has placed orders for 68 warships and vessels valued at approximately Rs 2 lakh crore. As per a TOI report, this strategic move aligns with India's overarching goal of safeguarding its extensive geostrategic interests and countering China's expanding presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The Indian Navy, currently boasting 132 warships, 143 aircraft, and 130 helicopters, has received preliminary approval, known as 'acceptance of necessity' (AoN), for the construction of eight next-generation corvettes, nine submarines, five survey vessels, and two multi-purpose vessels within India in the forthcoming years. Despite grappling with the slow-paced construction in domestic shipyards, the phased decommissioning of aging vessels, and fiscal constraints, the Navy anticipates achieving a force level of approximately 155-160 warships by 2030. However, the figures remain dynamic.
