Puri temple servitors protest, deities go hungry
Puri Jagannath temple faced an unusual delay in receiving their morning bhog on Friday, as a strike by temple servitors disrupted the customary routine. Typically, the deities are offered their first meal at 8:30 am, but on this day, hunger pangs continued until 5:30 pm. This disruption arose from a protest by servitors in response to a priest's controversial entry into the shrine for conducting rituals, despite a ban imposed on him due to his alleged inter-caste marriage in 2017, according to a report in the Times of India. While the strike impacted the scheduled rituals, the temple's public darshan remained unaffected.

Northern Railways' Lucknow division spends Rs 69 lakh to catch 168 rats!
Lucknow division of Northern Railways has spent a staggering amount of Rs 69.5 lakh between 2020 and 2022 to catch just 168 rats, according to a report in the Times of India. This astonishing expenditure breaks down to approximately Rs 23.2 lakh per year or slightly over Rs 41,000 per rodent. The startling figures were disclosed in response to an RTI query posed by Chandrashekhar Gaur, an RTI activist based in Neemuch. Pest and rodent control activities within the railways fall under the category of primary maintenance. This primary maintenance is carried out on trains that belong to the respective railway divisions. Northern Railways comprises five divisions: Delhi, Ambala, Lucknow, Ferozepur, and Moradabad. It is noteworthy that Gaur's RTI inquiry was directed at Northern Railways, with only Lucknow division providing a comprehensive response to his queries. «So far, the Ferozpur and Moradabad divisions have not replied. The Ambala & Delhi divisions' replies scurried past the questions, much like a clever rodent would on seeing a trap,» the Times of India report added. However, even Lucknow division's response lacked information on the extent of damage caused by rodents. In this regard, the division's central public information officer stated, «details not available for damaged goods and items. No assessment of damage has been made.»

United States largest public university system to hike tuition six per cent annually for next five years
California State University, the nation's largest public university system, voted Wednesday to raise student tuition by 6% each year for five consecutive years to try to narrow a $1.5 billion deficit, a decision that some students called disheartening. The university's governing board voted 15-5 to approve the increases that will start across the 23-campus system in the fall of 2024. Annual tuition for full-time California undergraduate students will increase by $342 next year to $6,084. By the 2028-2029 school year, those students will be paying $7,682. The tuition hikes are needed to provide support to students, both through financial aid and programs to help them succeed academically, university officials say. The extra revenue is also needed to give more resources to faculty and staff and maintain school facilities, according to a report about the system's finances released in May. The report found the system with 460,000 students, many of them minorities and first-generation college students, has enough revenue to cover about 86% of what it actually costs to meet student, staff, and institution needs, leaving it with a $1.5 billion gap. «We are at a crossroads and if we don't do it now… it's going to get more and more difficult,» said Julia Lopez, a CSU trustee and the co-chairperson of the working group that wrote this report.

Tata Steel to get £500 million from UK for Port Talbot
Tata Steel announced a revival plan for its UK unit, securing a £500 million grant from the Rishi Sunak government to help fund the transition of the Port Talbot plant to more sustainable technologies. The announcement marks the end of years-long negotiations between Tata Steel and multiple British governments. The grant will help the Port Talbot Steelworks, the largest steel plant in the UK, shift to electric arc furnaces. The project is estimated at £1.25 billion, with the rest of the capital expected to be put up by Tata Steel. The project will also involve Tata Steel's balance sheet being restructured with the potential elimination of the current cash losses in the UK operations and non-cash impairment of legacy investments, the company said. «The agreement with the UK government is a defining moment for the future of the steel industry and indeed the industrial value chain in the UK,» said Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran.

Can AI actors dethrone superstars?
Sunny Deol's Gadar 2, Akshay Kumar's OMG 2 and Chiranjeevi's Bhola Shankar did exceptional business across languages, multiplexes and single-screen halls. And Atlee's SRK- starring Jawan, of course, reinforced the trend with first-day collections of ₹74.5 crore. With generative AI becoming pervasive, will deepfakes replace actors? Or bring deceased actors back to life? The current turmoil in Hollywood could well be the trigger.

Gurugram is tweaking its urbanisation model to build taller buildings. This makes for efficiency from a town-planning perspective, reducing the cost of building cities and lowering the impact on the environment than that caused by sprawl. Given the pace of urbanisation in India, municipal bodies are challenged to keep housing costs low while providing facilities such as transport.
