NTT CEO on China’s AI shift, India expansion, and future of data centers
inferencing hardware, said Abhijit Dubey, global CEO of the Japanese data centre giant NTT DATA. “I think it (impact) is far more fundamental. It demonstrated that the unit cost economics are significantly lower from a training and inferencing standpoint. Number two, it demonstrated that open source is viable. And number three, that there's a lot more value in inferencing than just pure training.” However, despite the Chinese disruption, NTT has not recalibrated capex plans for data centres and the industry is undergoing a boom cycle, he said. Globally, NTT has committed to invest 8 trillion Yen ($59 billion) between FY2023 to FY2027 in data centres and AI.

Public Sector Banks must focus on capital strength, cost efficiency: Govt
Public sector banks must plan for appropriate and timely capital raising and strive to reduce intermediation costs to make banking products and services, particularly credit-related, affordable to the public, said M Nagaraju, secretary of the department of financial services on Monday. He was addressing bankers at the 77th annual general meeting of the Indian Banks' Association (IBA). «Each bank needs to identify its focus on building capacity and planning road maps for appropriate and timely capital raising or efficient allocation of resources, besides striving to bring down intermediation costs,» Nagaraju said. Speaking at the same event, State Bank of India chairman CS Setty said as new and unfamiliar industries emerge, banks must develop the expertise to assess these evolving business models and lending risks.

RBI liquidity boost may lower lending rates sooner than expected
Indian lenders as early as next month. Multiple-and simultaneous-central bank measures to boost systemic liquidity will help reduce the rates on instruments such as certificates of deposit (CD) and commercial paper (CP). Lower capital costs should also bring down lending rates earlier than expected. «The central bank's stance on liquidity management seems to have shifted toward 'accommodative' from 'neutral', as reflected in the large liquidity infusion through multiple tools,» said Soumyajit Niyogi, director-core analytical group at India Ratings. «If this continues, the overall rates in the economy, including lending rates by banks, may start softening.» However, the bet is on short-term rates easing first in FY26, when lower inflation is expected to help prolong the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) easing cycle.

Harvard announces free tuition for students from families making $200k or less; here’s what it covers
Harvard University announced on Monday that they will offer free tuition to students from families earning $200,000 or less per year. The aid, the university said, will be handed out starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. The initiative significantly expands the university’s financial aid programme and aims to make higher education more accessible to a broader range of students. Harvard President Alan M Garber stated that the move would diversify student backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. This, he said, will foster intellectual and personal growth. As per the reports, the expansion will enable 86 per cent of the families in the United States to qualify for Harvard’s financial aid programme. The announcement of assistance furthers its commitment to supporting students from diverse economic backgrounds.

Sunny side down: The many gaps in India’s solar story

New Delhi: When Bell Laboratories developed the first silicon solar cell in 1954, a technological breakthrough that converted sunlight into electricity, the invention made headlines. “It may mark the beginning of a new era," went a story in The New York Times, “leading eventually to the realization of one of mankind’s most cherished dreams—the harnessing of the almost limitless energies of the sun." That hope was born out of a humbling statistic: the amount of sunlight that strikes the earth’s surface in an hour and a half is enough to meet the world’s energy demand for a year.

Trump tariffs on lumber and appliances set stage for higher costs on new homes and remodeling projects
Trump administration's tariffs on imported goods from Canada, Mexico and China — some already in place, others set to take effect in a few weeks — are already driving up the cost of building materials used in new residential construction and home remodeling projects. The tariffs are projected to raise the costs that go into building a single-family home in the US by USD 7,500 to USD 10,000, according to the National Association of Home Builders. Such costs are typically passed along to the homebuyer in the form of higher prices, which could hurt demand at a time when the US housing market remains in a slump and many builders are having to offer buyers costly incentives to drum up sales. We Buy Houses in San Francisco, which purchases foreclosed homes and then typically renovates and sells them, is increasing prices on its refurbished properties between 7 per cent and 12 per cent. That's even after saving USD 52,000 in costs by stockpiling 62 per cent more Canadian lumber than usual. «The uncertainty of how long these tariffs will continue has been the most challenging aspect of our planning,» said CEO Mamta Saini.

Tariffs might not happen but tequila is already paying the price
Donald Trump's tariffs on Mexico are not imposed, the threats and uncertainty caused by on and off-again levies have already cost the tequila sector money and could drive a temporary slowdown in sales, producers, investors and analysts told Reuters. The 25% tariffs, initially due to be applied from February and briefly in place on March 4 before being suspended on both occasions, threatened billions of dollars of imports from huge producers like Diageo and Becle alone. They prompted businesses and consumers to stockpile tequila, which can only be made in Mexico, freeze expansion plans and divert resources elsewhere. Some producers, restaurants and drinkers accumulated hefty tequila stock, sometimes of up to six months — a bet which will pay off if tariffs are imposed. But producers say this also has a cost, hurting the sector even if the tariffs are rolled back. «No matter what happens… a price has been paid,» said Mike Novy, chief executive officer of Calabasas Beverage Company, which operates the tequila brand founded by Kendall Jenner, 818 Tequila.

Tata Motors to hike commercial vehicle prices up to 2% starting 1st April, 2025
Tata Motors announced on Monday a price increase of up to 2% across its entire commercial vehicle range, effective from 1st April 2025. The price increase is to offset the rise in input costs, and will vary as per individual model and variant,» the company said in an exchange filing.

Gene therapy for blood cancer shows 73 per cent response rate in clinical trials
CAR T-cell therapy', the treatment involves modifying genes in one's T-cells — a type of immune cells — to help fight cancer. The study looked at patients with leukaemia, which occurs in bone marrow, and lymphoma, which affects the lymphatic system. Researchers, including those from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay and Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, said in low and middle-income countries, patients in whom 'B-cell' tumours continue to grow following a period of remission (relapse), or do not respond to treatment (refractory), suffer from poor outcomes due to an absence of effective therapies. A type of white blood cell, B-cells are crucial to one's immune system as they produce antibodies to fight infections.

India will drive global oil consumption growth: Phillip Capital
«With GDP growth projections above 6 per cent annually, India's energy demand will continue to soar, and the country will remain heavily reliant on fossil fuels, including oil, to meet its needs,» said the report. As per the International Energy Agency (IEA) India's oil demand is projected to rise by 1.3 million barrels per day (mbpd) by 2030. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) estimates an even higher increase of 1.8 mbpd, bringing India's total oil consumption to 7.1 mbpd, up from 5.3 mbpd in 2023.
