Israel recaptures Gaza border areas on day four; death toll passes 3,000
Gaza border areas from Hamas militants as the war's death toll passed 3,000 on Tuesday, the fourth day of fierce fighting since the Islamists launched a surprise attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Israel's military campaign following Saturday's onslaught was only the start of a sustained war to destroy Hamas and «change the Middle East». Fears of a regional conflagration have surged amid expectations of a looming Israeli ground incursion into Gaza, the crowded enclave from where Hamas launched its land, air and sea attack on the Jewish Sabbath. The death toll in Israel has surged above 900 from the worst attack in the country's 75-year history, while Gaza officials have reported 765 people killed so far. Hamas gunmen killed more than 100 people in the kibbutz of Beeri alone, said Moti Bukjin, a volunteer with the charity Zaka that recovers bodies in accordance with Jewish law.

'There is no urgency to cut interest rates right now': IMF's Asia and Pacific director Krishna Srinivasan
Reserve Bank of India should continue to stay the course until inflation comes down, says Krishna Srinivasan, director of the International Monetary Fund's Asia and Pacific Department. In an interview with Deepshikha Sikarwar on the sidelines of the ongoing annual meeting in Marrakech, he said this is a time when you have to be conservative both on monetary side and fiscal side to bring inflation down durably to build fiscal buffers. Edited Excerpts: There is a new geo-political crisis confronting the world. From India's point of view, what kind of impact do you see? At this point in time, we are trying to assess the impact.

India can ride out Gaza war impact on crude: IMF ED KV Subramanian
India should be able to tide over the spike in crude oil prices due to the latest conflict in Gaza, International Monetary Fund executive director KV Subramanian noted, saying that the development for the global economy meant more uncertainty. «As it is even before this particular incident there was uncertainty, one because of the high levels of debt in many economies together with elevated commodity prices because of the war in Ukraine. On top of that this adds uncertainty, which may impact, I think, the global growth, possibly, in an even more negative manner,» he told ET on the sidelines of the ongoing annual International Monetary Fund and World Bank meeting here. Crude oil prices jumped 4% soon after the conflict broke out.

Amazon confirms plans to roll out satcom broadband
Amazon has said it is looking forward to working with the Indian government and local partners to bring «affordable broadband» across the country in its first comments on entering India's nascent satcom market. «Project Kuiper (Amazon's broadband-from-space venture) will bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world, including rural and remote places in India,» an Amazon spokesperson told ET in an emailed statement. «This (the move into India) is a long-term initiative for Amazon, and we look forward to working with the Indian government and local partners to connect customers and communities across the country,» it said. The Jeff Bezos-owned US tech giant's statement comes a day after ET reported in its October 10 edition that the US major has applied to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (In-Space) for getting required approvals to provide broadband services in the country.

Government to push space companies to cut imports and Make in India
space sector to cut dependence on imports and manufacture space services-related equipment locally, as is the case with the telecom sector, the minister of state for communications, Devusinh Chauhan, said. “India’s telecom sector had huge reliance on imports, but...the country is now manufacturing telecom products (locally) and preparing for the next-generation of telecom technology…,” Chauhan said at an industry event on Tuesday. “Space will also have (an indigenous) technology like this.” The minister called on industry and stakeholders to explore additional futuristic technologies that could be “worked upon” in the telecom and satellite sectors. Tata-backed Nelco, though, warned that the very survival of satellite players in India would be at stake if satellite spectrum is not priced right by the government. The company reiterated the call for satellite spectrum allotment via the administrative route, as is the global practice. “Spectrum is the satellite industry’s lifeline…unless that is really (at) the right price, it will be impossible for the industry to survive,” Nelco managing director PJ Nath said at the event.

Neither DPI hype nor false modesty serves our interests
₹2,400. While all the arguments so far suggest that India massaged the truth to its benefit, the main thrust of the piece is that the India achieved its success through “gratuitous acts of coercion." This, the article suggests, ought not to have been the case—that we should have, instead, allowed the free play of market forces. It is this top-down approach—this “unnecessary paternalism"—that it comes down hardest on.

UEFA says abandoning plans to re-admit Russian under-17 teams
UEFA said Tuesday it had abandoned plans to re-admit Russian under-17 teams into the youth European Championship next year. «No technical solution to allow Russian teams to play could be found,» UEFA said. In September, UEFA reinstated Russian youth teams to its competitions, having suspended the country's senior sides due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. UEFA argued that youth players should not have to pay the price for the actions of adults. That decision sparked anger in Kyiv, which said in response it would boycott all UEFA competitions featuring Russian teams. On Tuesday, Kyiv thanked UEFA for scrapping the plans.
