Apple to update iPhone 12 software in France to settle radiation row
Apple said on Friday it would issue a software update for iPhone 12 users in France to potentially end a row with French regulators that ordered the suspension of the phone's sale due to breaches of radiation exposure limits. «We will issue a software update for users in France to accommodate the protocol used by French regulators. We look forward to iPhone 12 continuing to be available in France,» Apple said in a statement. «This is related to a specific testing protocol used by French regulators and not a safety concern,» it said. The French government welcomed the move. «The ANFR (French regulator) is preparing to quickly test this update,» French Digital Affairs Minister Jean Noel Barrot's ministry said in a statement, adding this should bring the model into compliance with European standards and allow France to lift the sale suspension. Apple has contested the French radiation findings, saying the iPhone 12 — now a relatively old model launched in 2020 — was certified by multiple international bodies as compliant with global standards. Belgium said on Thursday it would review potential health risks linked to Apple's iPhone 12 in the wake of France's sale suspension, while others, like Germany, said they would wait to see how the situation in French developed. Apple's revenues totalled about $95 billion in Europe last year, making the region its second biggest behind the Americas.

Climate protesters around the world are calling for an end to fossils fuels as the Earth heats up
climate activists around the world are set to march, chant and protest Friday to call for an end to the burning of planet-warming fossil fuels as the globe suffers dramatic weather extremes and record-breaking heat. The strike — driven by several mostly youth-led, local and global climate groups and organizations, including Greta Thunberg's Fridays for Future movement — will take place in dozens of countries and in hundreds of cities worldwide and continue through the weekend. A week before the planned protest, the United Nations warned that countries are way off track to curb warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times, as agreed in Paris in 2015.

CWC 'very balanced', 'good mix' of youth and experience; Hyderabad meeting crucial: Sachin Pilot
Sachin Pilot on Friday hailed the reconstituted CWC as «very balanced» and having a «good mix» of youth and experience, while asserting that the Hyderabad meeting of the party's highest decision-making body was crucial in view of the upcoming state polls. Pilot, who along with other new faces such as Shashi Tharoor found a place in the reconstituted Congress Working Committee (CWC) last month, said he has always fulfilled with utmost sincerity any role that has been assigned to him by the party but his «heart lies in Rajasthan» and that is where he «can add most value». In an exclusive interview with PTI, Pilot said the Congress has to play a «leading role» in the INDIA bloc because it is the largest party of the alliance but asserted that everyone was being given mutual respect in the bloc. It is not about who occupies which position of power or post, all those issues would be taken up at the appropriate time perhaps even after the Lok Sabha polls, Pilot said of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). Asked whether the Congress would play the role of the fulcrum of the opposition alliance as it did in the UPA, the former Union minister said everyone in the alliance has a role to play but the Congress is the largest party in Parliament among the bloc and in a democracy, numbers matter. «Every constituent of INDIA is an important player and has a role to contribute.

Blood is life: 1 in 4 people globally suffer from anaemia
reducing anaemia have failed to substantially reduce the massive burden of anaemia globally over the last few decades. People become anemic when their blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. This decreased oxygen delivery causes many of the most common symptoms of anaemia, including fatigue, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, difficulty concentrating and challenges with work and daily life tasks. In addition to its direct health effects, anaemia can inhibit brain development and fine motor skills in children and heighten the risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease, dementia and other chronic illnesses in older adults. Anaemia during pregnancy can lead to increased rates of anxiety and depression, early labour, postpartum hemorrhage, stillbirth and low birth weight. Infections for both mother and baby are also more likely when the mother is anemic. We are global health researchers with expertise in epidemiological modeling of anaemia alongside other maternal, neonatal and nutritional disorders. Our work is part of the Global Burden of Disease Study, a large research study comprehensively estimating health loss due to hundreds of diseases, injuries and risk factors around the globe. Through our analysis, we have produced annual estimates of anaemia prevalence by underlying cause for 204 countries and territories, by age and sex, from 1990 to the present. We have collected thousands of data points across hundreds of sources to produce the most comprehensive picture of anaemia burden.

The path ahead for China’s Belt and Road Initiative
Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the scheme’s official name in English, as a gift to the world that has created huge economic benefits. China claims that 420,000 jobs have been created in BRI countries and 40m people lifted out of poverty thanks to BRI-generated growth. America, and many of its allies, see the BRI as far less benign: a political tool aimed at stifling foreign criticism of Mr Xi’s iron-fisted rule and providing a leg-up for his country’s firms that has saddled countries with crippling debt.
