Tech platforms played a role in widening US divisions
Many of my friends in the US, even the ones I consider well educated and reasonable in their views, have turned dejected with the social and political discourse in their country. Some have even remarked to me that they expect a ‘civil war’ in their country sometime soon. I do not believe this is the case; nonetheless, there are two salient contributing factors which I will discuss here: one is technological change, and the other, demographic change.

In-person teaching has value if it’s led by values
Days after a teacher in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar was caught on camera urging her students to hit their Muslim classmate, a teacher in Karnataka’s Shivamogga asked two Muslim students to “go to Pakistan." In the former case, the child had forgotten tables of multiplication, apparently, but the authority figure in class thought it fit to bring up his nominal faith. In the latter, the country named left no doubt over the sentiment of rejection behind the words. Together, both tell us how casually bigotry has invaded our classrooms.

Indian economic prospects may require a more realistic analysis
demonetization, contracted by 7% as a result of a poorly executed pandemic lockdown, making it one of the world’s worst-performing economies. As a result, from 2020 to 2023, India’s average annual growth turned out to be less than 4%, which is not bad for a phase of global economic turmoil, but far less impressive than recent figures suggests, let alone slogans and headlines. Furthermore, the benefits of this growth are going almost entirely to the rich.

25% target for state debt levels for the short-term; Punjab most pressurized: BoB study
debt levels and bring them closer to the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management goal of 20%, a recent study by economists at Bank of Baroda stated. The study suggested debt to GDP ratio at 25% as a short-term goal and the interest to revenue receipts ratio targeted at around 15%. “This can be a good beginning with roadmaps drawn up for various states,” the research stated. Four states will allocate more than 15% of their revenue towards interest payments in FY24, with Punjab contributing nearly a quarter of its revenue to interest payments, the research found. The study, analysing budget data for FY24 for 27 states, pointed that only three states in the country were closer to their FRBM target of 20% debt to Gross State Domestic Product ratio, whereas 15 were over 30%. “The problem is that when debt levels are high interest payments increase, which strains the revenue budget,” said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist, Bank of Baroda. While the study placed Odisha as the best state having controlled its debt, fiscal deficit and interest payment levels. It placed Punjab as the worst, with high levels of debt, fiscal deficit, interest payment ratios and outstanding guarantees. “Himachal Pradesh is however more vulnerable as the debt servicing ratio is high.

Why Joe Biden should scrap US citizenship tests
Exactly 10 years ago, I joined 136 people from 43 countries at a naturalization ceremony in a courtroom in downtown New York to proclaim our allegiance to the country that had embraced us as its own. Overcome by the emotional charge of the occasion, we struggled to keep our voices steady — and our eyes dry. Even Janet Napolitano, administering her final oath as secretary of homeland security, teared up as she welcomed us as “my fellow citizens.” I was flanked by a young woman from Ukraine and a middle-aged man from Peru; she worked on Wall Street, and he was a cab driver. As we told each other of the journeys that had brought us to that magical moment, her English was heavily accented; his was liberally interspersed with Spanish. At one point, we talked about what had been the final hurdle on the path: The citizenship tests. She’d found the civics quiz quite stressful; he, like me, thought it had been easy-peasy. We didn’t talk about the other test — the one that judged our English skills. More than likely, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services officers who had interviewed us skipped over that part of the process in order to move things along. In my case, the examining officer had said something along the lines of, “You’ve made it this far. There’s no need to waste our time on this.” The Biden administration, which is proposing to make the English test harder, apparently does not understand what my USCIS examiner had come to recognize, from some combination of intuition and experience: If you want to be an American and have lived in this country long enough to qualify, then a language test is entirely redundant.
