A US plan to restrict investment in China is likely to apply only to Chinese companies that get at least half of their revenue from cutting-edge sectors such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence, people familiar with the matter said. The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday, provides for an easy cross-border movement and processing of personal data in all geographies, except those barred by the government from time to time. The bill, however, also stipulates that this provision shall not restrict any other laws which mandate and provide “for a higher degree of protection for or restriction” on the transfer of personal data outside India by a data fiduciary. The sectoral laws by various regulators will supersede the provisions of the DPDP Bill when it comes to mandates for data localisation, a senior government official told ET.

In the Akola (Maharashtra) market and in Gulbarga (Karnataka), the price of tur dal shot up from Rs 136/kg to Rs 140/kg last week, while the price of tur imported from Mozambique increased by a substantial Rs 5.5/kg in a week in Mumbai. According to trade data, all India urad sowing is down by close to 14%, while sowing of tur is down by about 8%.
