Can UN summits save the planet? A faltering year of talks brings up questions about the process
In the past few months United Nations-sponsored negotiations to tackle climate change, plastic pollution, loss of global species and a growing number of deserts have either outright failed or come out with limited outcomes that didn't address the scale of the problems. It's been three years since activist Greta Thunberg dismissed global talks as «blah-blah-blah,» which became a rallying cry for young environmentalists. «If you are not feeling some kind of grief about what's going on, you're obviously not understanding what's going on,» said climate negotiations veteran analyst Alden Meyer of the European think-tank E3G. He said he's been watching humanity «collectively fail as a species.»

India, with booming billionaires, is the gold mine luxury brands have been hunting for
luxury brands are increasingly eyeing India as a key market for their expansion, tapping into the country's growing appetite for premium products. As wealth rises and aspirations soar, India is emerging as a critical battleground for luxury retailers, a trend that has only accelerated since the pandemic. One of the most significant shifts in the luxury landscape is the influx of global brands aiming to diversify their markets. With China facing an economic slowdown, luxury giants are now looking beyond their traditional markets, and India is quickly becoming one of their top choices. «India is one of our fastest growing markets though our presence is currently concentrated in Delhi and Mumbai. Over the next decade, we anticipate India to become one of the most promising markets for the luxury industry, particularly for fine watches,» Jean-Marc Pontroue, CEO of Panerai, told ToI.

Narayana Murthy explains how India can overcome poverty with 70-hour workweek
Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has once again defended his stance on the need for a 70-hour workweek. During a recent visit to Kolkata, which he described as «the most cultured place in the entire country,» Murthy emphasized that India’s youth must embrace hard work if the country is to reach its full potential on the global stage. He addressed the issue at the centenary launch of the Indian Chamber of Commerce, sharing his thoughts with RPSG Group chairman Sanjiv Goenka. Murthy stressed that India’s young workforce must aim higher to achieve national progress. «At Infosys, we compared ourselves with the best global companies, and I can tell you, we Indians still have a lot of work ahead,» Murthy said. He pointed out that 800 million Indians rely on free rations, a sign of the nation’s widespread poverty. «If we are not in a position to work hard, then who will?» he asked, urging the audience to take responsibility for their collective future.

Time we re-evaluate real value of wealth
Jeff Bezos' suggestion in a recent NYT interview that the world's richest be listed not by the fortunes they have amassed, but by the wealth they have created for others is an interesting take on the debate over rising inequality. It's also a new, legitimate take on what it means to be wealthy. In the process of making a couple of hundred billion dollars for Bezos, Amazon has made its investors richer by over $2 tn, perhaps a truer indication of wealth-creation.

UltraTech Cement Limited becomes India's first cement company to use inland waterways for gypsum transport
UltraTech Cement Limited is leveraging inland waterways to transport a large consignment of mineral gypsum via National Waterway 1 (Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system) in a pilot project that was flagged off by the Minister of Shipping, Ports, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal at G.R. Jetty, Kolkata today. UltraTech is the first cement company in India to leverage National Waterway 1 for gypsum transport at scale. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Inland & Coastal Shipping Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), supported UltraTech's participation in the pilot. The consignment is being shipped from Haldia port in West Bengal to the Gaighat terminal in Patna, Bihar, and transported to Pataliputra Cement Works, UltraTech’s cement grinding unit in Patna district, Bihar. The use of inland waterways over roadways and railways will result in significant carbon emissions reductions and help decongest roads and rail routes. UltraTech’s participation in the pilot provides a boost to the Central government's efforts to promote the use of inland waterways in the country.
