India probe finds Amazon, Walmart's Flipkart breached antitrust laws
Amazon and Walmart's Flipkart violated local competition laws by giving preference to select sellers on their shopping websites, according to confidential reports seen by Reuters. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) in 2020 ordered an investigation into Amazon and Flipkart for allegedly promoting certain sellers with which they had business arrangements and giving priority to certain listings. In a 1027-page report on Amazon and a separate 1,696-page report on Flipkart, both dated Aug. 9, the CCI investigators said the two companies were found to have created an ecosystem where preferred sellers appeared higher in search results, elbowing out other sellers.

Supreme Court allows Adani-Dickey consortium to continue operating Coastal Energen power plant
Adani Power and Dickey Alternative Investment Trust to continue to operate Coastal Energen's 1,200 MW-thermal power plant till the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) decided various appeals against the approval granted to the resolution plan for the debt-laden firm. However, the apex court said that the Adani-Dickey consortium, the successful resolution applicant (SRA), would not dismantle the Coastal Energen’s power plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, or create any third party rights or create any financial obligations except in the ordinary course of business. The Bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said that “prima facie, we are of the view that the September 6 order (of NCLAT) suffers from internal inconsistency. The first part indicates status quo ante has to be restored and the second part shows status quo has to be maintained as on date.”

NCLAT) has adjourned the case involving Glas Trust Co, which represents a group of US lenders to troubled edtech firm Byju’s, and its parent company, Think & Learn, to October 1. The matter was adjourned on Thursday as the Supreme Court is also hearing an appeal by Glas Trust, opposing a Rs 158-crore settlement arrived at between the edtech firm and the BCCI, alleging that the money paid by Byju Raveendran’s brother Riju Ravindran was tainted. The matter is likely to be heard on September 17. On August 14, the Supreme Court revived the insolvency case against Byju's, overturning a NCLAT decision that had quashed the bankruptcy proceedings and approved the settlement agreement with the BCCI.

Coaching centre deaths: Delhi HC asks CBI to state reason behind waterlogging
CBI to inform it the reason behind the heavy waterlogging in Old Rajinder Nagar on July 27 when three civil services aspirants died after drowning in a flooded coaching basement. The co-owners of the basement — Parvinder Singh, Tajinder Singh, Harvinder Singh and Sarbjit Singh — had moved the high court last month for bail on the ground that they are merely the landlords of the basement which was let out on rental basis to the coaching centre and, therefore, they had no role whatsoever in the unfortunate event. «What was the reason on that day? Delhi has witnessed heavy downpours. Why so much waterlogging on that day? Was it the rain or something else,» questioned Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma while hearing the bail pleas of the jailed co-owners of the basement.

Kevin Spacey ‘plays victim,’ demands $100K to vacate Baltimore home sold to investor
Kevin Spacey, an American actor, is asking for $100,000 to vacate his Baltimore residence, even though the property has been sold to a new owner. Spacey's 9,000-square-foot, five-story condo, located in a gated community, was foreclosed on and sold at auction in July. The sale followed Spacey's financial difficulties due to limited work opportunities after #MeToo accusations. Real estate investor Sam Asgari purchased the property for $3.24 million. Asgari alleges Spacey’s demand for money to leave the property amounts to extortion. He stated, “He asked me for $100,000 to leave the property on November 17 and I said no but he said that was his final offer." Asgari is planning legal action, asserting that Spacey is overstaying and causing financial strain. Asgari claims the situation is costing him $40,000 monthly in fees, taxes, and utilities.

Courtroom humour reels go live: Delhi HC launches ‘Humour in Court’ to share witty, memorable moments online
Humour in Court" on its official website. This section is designed to collect and share witty and memorable exchanges from courtrooms, offering an alternative glimpse into the typically serious environment of legal proceedings. The initiative was launched by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan, alongside two other innovative services—the Delhi High Court WhatsApp Services and the Delhi High Court e-Museum. Justice Rajiv Shakdher, who chairs the IT, AI, and Accessibility Committee, emphasized the significance of maintaining a lighter atmosphere in courtrooms. He noted that humor often emerges in legal proceedings and can offer a welcome break from the intense formality that often surrounds court cases. “This project is very close to my heart. Often, the history of times is revealed and recorded through these anecdotes. The judges who sat and the great lawyers who argued the matter are often recorded by way of these anecdotes," said Justice Shakdher during the launch. Justice Shakdher further explained that the platform would allow users to share courtroom anecdotes, provided they adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs). He stressed that the anecdotes should not name individuals and must remain within boundaries of decency. “We need not be very sensitive and need to learn to laugh at ourselves,” he added, hinting at the need for both lawyers and judges to embrace the occasional levity of courtroom exchanges. He also mentioned that he had considered naming the initiative the «funny bone committee.»
