Donald Trump asks judge to delay sentencing in hush money case until after November election
Donald Trump is asking the judge in his New York hush money criminal case to delay his sentencing until after the November presidential election. In a letter made public Thursday, a lawyer for the former president and current Republican nominee suggested that sentencing Trump as scheduled on Sept. 18 — about seven weeks before Election Day — would amount to election interference. Trump lawyer Todd Blanche wrote that a delay would also allow Trump time to weigh next steps after the trial judge, Juan M. Merchan, is expected to rule Sept. 16 on the defense's request to overturn the verdict and dismiss the case because of the U.S. Supreme Court's July presidential immunity ruling.

Why Dhruv Rathee is facing backlash for his social media post on Kolkata doctor rape-murder case
Dhruv Rathee, a prominent YouTuber, is facing severe criticism after he deleted a social media post regarding the rape-murder case of a Kolkata doctor and later disclosed the victim's identity in a video. His actions on social media have ignited a public backlash, questioning his sensitivity and understanding of the laws surrounding such cases. The controversy began when Rathee shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) with the hashtag “Justice For Nirbhaya 2” in reference to the Kolkata doctor’s case. The post was quickly deleted, leading to speculation and criticism from the public. Many accused Rathee of succumbing to pressure from the ruling TMC government in West Bengal, alleging that he removed the post to avoid potential repercussions. Rathee later clarified his decision to delete the post, explaining that he found the comparison to the Nirbhaya case to be insensitive after receiving feedback from his followers.

Backdoor politics won’t work, Siddaramaiah warns Centre; says development not possible without funding support
Siddaramaiah on Thursday urged the Centre to release a fair amount of grants to states for development while accusing it of discrimination in the allocation of funds. By ignoring constitutional principles, there is a tendency to delay the financial share due to the states, he said, adding that this attitude was compelling the states to seek legal recourse to get their rightful share from the Centre. Teams of ministers from Karnataka and Kerala, led by chief ministers Siddaramaiah and Pinarayi Vijayan had staged a protest demonstration in Delhi in February alleging discrimination in allocation of funds to the Opposition-ruled states by the NDA government. Kerala even moved the apex court to assert its rights.

US said to consider a breakup of Google to address search monopoly
Google was found last week to have violated antitrust law by illegally maintaining a monopoly in internet search. Now discussions over how to fix those violations have begun. Justice Department officials are considering what remedies to ask a federal judge to order against the search giant, said three people with knowledge of the deliberations involving the agency and state attorneys general who helped to bring the case. They are discussing various proposals, including breaking off parts of Google, such as its Chrome browser or Android smartphone operating system, two of the people said. Other scenarios under consideration include forcing Google to make its data available to rivals, or mandating that it abandon deals that made its search engine the default option on devices like the iPhone, said the people, who declined to be identified because the process is confidential. The government is meeting with other companies and experts to discuss their proposals for limiting Google's power, the people said.

Independence Day: No, India did not get complete independence in 1947. Here's why
Poorna Swaraj, as was the goal of the Indian National Congress, on August 15, 1947. Jawaharlal Nehru's famous uttering in his Independence Day speech, «At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom», was only partially accurate in describing the occasion. Also Read: Videshi to Swadeshi: Brands that propelled journey towards Atmanirbharta Instead of Poorna Swaraj, India got the dominion status which did not mean an independent country as most of us believe India to have become in 1947. Though India became a self-governing entity, it was still under British control in several ways. Interestingly, the Congress had been against the dominion status yet accepted it, ostensibly because it was to lead to complete independence later but also because the dominion status could have helped the first government, which was not directly elected, take hold of society and economy with the help of prevailing British laws which gave it more power of people.

Court upholds $267 million legal fee award in Dell lawsuit
Dell Technologies, the Delaware Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday, rejecting arguments that the payment was a windfall. The fee is one of the largest ever for U.S. shareholder litigation. A Delaware trial court is weighing two other requests for huge legal fees, both in cases involving Tesla, and the ruling contained language that might be seen as helpful for the carmaker's efforts to fight those fees.

Mint Quick Edit | Why do institutions matter?
“Marriage is a wonderful institution," Groucho Marx quipped, “but who wants to live in an institution?" His joke played on two kinds of set-ups, the latter referring to the one for mental healthcare. On a serious note, Douglass North defined institutions as “the humanly devised constraints that structure political, economic and social interactions." They comprise “both informal constraints (sanctions, taboos, customs, traditions and codes of conduct) and formal rules (constitutions, laws, property rights)." Samuel Huntington, famous for his discredited “clash of civilizations" thesis, held forth a definition based on particulars instead of universals: “Institutions are stable, valued, recurring patterns of behaviour.
