Mayawati on Sunday announced that her party will field candidates in all the 10 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh where bypolls are going to be held. The Election Commission is yet to declare the schedule for the by-elections to Karhal, Milkipur, Katehari, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair, Meerapur, Phulpur, Majhawan and Sisamau assembly seats. In a statement, released after a meeting of the BSP's state unit district chiefs, office bearers and functionaries, the party said Mayawati reviewed the preparations for the upcoming assembly bypolls. «Ten assembly constituencies have fallen vacant after the Lok Sabha elections. No official announcement of the date has been made so far but activities pertaining to this are increasing continuously, especially the ruling party, BJP, and its government have made it an issue of prestige, due to which the interest of the people in the bypolls has also increased,» it said.

AAP on Sunday demanded that the Supreme Court take note of the allegations levelled by US short seller Hindenburg against SEBI chief Madhabi Puri Buch. Hindenburg Research has alleged that it suspects SEBI's unwillingness to act against Adani Group may be because Madhabi Puri had stakes in offshore funds linked to the conglomerate — an allegation that the SEBI head called «baseless» and an attempt of «character assassination». Addressing a press conference here, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said the SEBI had told a Supreme Court panel that the investigation into the Adani group was «directionless». «SEBI chief and her husband's money was invested in shell companies. Why were these facts hidden from the Supreme Court? The apex Court should take note of the new developments and how facts were hidden,» he said.

Arjun Ram Meghwal has accused the opposition of creating confusion among people over the Supreme Court «observation» on creamy layer among SCs and STs, and asserted that the Constitution given by B R Ambedkar has no provision of a creamy layer. In an interview to PTI Videos, he said the the BJP-led NDA government will follow Ambedkar's Constitution and will continue the reservation system for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as provided in it. Meghwal noted that though the opposition is aware that the top court had only made an «observation» on creamy layer, it is trying to create confusion among people. Mamata Banerjee on Saturday vowed to seek death penalty for the accused in the brutal sexual assault and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in a state-run hospital. Her announcement came shortly after the accused, who was reportedly an outsider frequenting the hospital premises, was arrested and later remanded to 14-day police custody. Banerjee also instructed officials to expedite the trial by moving it to a fast track court. He further added that this showed how a person was put in jail by deceit and that his rights were violated. «He was granted bail after 17 months. How a person is put in jail by deceit, and is not even allowed any bail, his rights are violated. I have also felt the same pain. The government in this country has no proper law and order. Be it Sanjay Singh or Anil Deshmukh, there are a lot of people I have seen,» he said.

IndusInd International Holdings (IIHL), the winning bidder to take over Reliance Capital Ltd has transferred Rs 2,750 crore to a designated escrow amount in line with the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) directions, one person with the direct knowledge of the transfer said. «The money was received on Saturday morning which is what the court had directed. IIHL has also given a binding term sheet by banks which has details of the loans they will raise to finnance the transaction,» this person said. On Thursday a NCLT bench, comprising Justices Virendrasingh G Bisht and Prabhat Kumar, directed IIHL to implement the resolution plan by August 10 and deposit the equity component of Rs 2,750 crore in an escrow account designated by the committee of creditors (CoC).

The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, held a detailed discussion on the Supreme Court judgement on the sub-categorisation of reservation for SCs and STs as granted in the Constitution. «It is the well thought view of the Union Cabinet that the NDA government is firmly committed to the provisions in the Constitution given by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar,» Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters here. He said there was a detailed discussion in the Union Cabinet meeting on a recent Supreme Court judgement that made certain suggestions on the reservation for the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).

According to the forensic reports received by police on Friday, Mihir Shah's blood samples have tested negative for alcohol. The report indicates that the main accused, Mihir Shah, was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The Worli police arrested the accused Mihir Shah from Virar Fata approximately 58 hours after the incident. The police stated that by the time of his arrest, about 58 hours after the incident, the alcohol had likely left his body.
