Trump tried everything to avoid a criminal trial. The day has arrived.
Donald Trump will become the first former president to sit for a criminal trial when he appears in a New York court Monday, kicking off a highly unusual stretch in which the Republican will campaign for a new term while defending himself against accusations he directed an illegal scheme to pay off a porn star. The case of People v. Trump itself is a mixed bag, with the lowest stakes of the four prosecutions he faces.

Ambedkar Jayanti 2024: Why is Article 32 considered the 'heart and soul' of the Indian Constitution
Ambedkar Jayanti 2024: April 14 marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, affectionately known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, revered by his followers as a champion of justice and equality. Each year, this occasion is commemorated not only by government officials and politicians but also by countless admirers both within India and around the world. Dr. Ambedkar's legacy is deeply intertwined with the Constitution of India, which he played a pivotal role in drafting to secure the rights of marginalised communities, particularly Dalits. Among the many provisions of the Constitution, Dr. Ambedkar held one article in particular as paramount — Article 32. In the constituent assembly debates, he described it as the «heart and soul» of the Constitution, without which it would be rendered meaningless. Article 32 ensures the enforcement of Fundamental Rights enshrined in Part III of the Constitution, including the right to equality, life, and freedom from discrimination. This article empowers citizens to directly approach the Supreme Court if their Fundamental Rights are violated or not being upheld. It serves as a safeguard against legislative encroachment on these rights, ensuring that they are not suspended except as provided by the Constitution itself. Article 32 is not only integral to the basic structure of the Constitution but is also considered a Fundamental Right in itself.

How a hush money scandal tied to a porn star led to Trump's first criminal trial
Donald Trump might've relished before politics: a porn actress claiming they'd had sex. But on the eve of the 2016 presidential election, Trump feared the story — which he says is false — would cost him votes. So, prosecutors say, he arranged to pay Stormy Daniels to keep quiet.

Had Modi not been there, Ayodhya Ram temple would not have been built: Raj Thackeray
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray on Saturday claimed that had Prime Minister Narendra Modi not been there, the Ayodhya Ram temple would not have been built despite the Supreme Court's ruling. Talking to reporters here, Thackeray, who has declared unconditional support to PM Modi for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, said MNS will prepare a list of leaders the 'Mahayuti' alliance can contact for poll coordination. Thackeray, however, parried questions on whether he will address rallies for the Mahayuti, Maharashtra's ruling alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP. Thackeray said he met his party men, office-bearers and frontal organisations, and asked them to canvass for Mahayuti-backed candidates, hoping that MNS leaders will get due respect.

A primer on Trump’s criminal trials
Editor’s note (March 18th 2024): This article has been updated to take in the latest developments. Running for the American presidency is a full-time job. “There was essentially no day or night" from the first presidential debate in September 1976 to election day, griped James Fallows, now a journalist, who worked on Jimmy Carter’s campaign. Donald Trump, now sure of the Republican Party’s nomination for this year’s election, will have to combine that gruelling endeavour with his role as a defendant in four criminal trials.

Integration of AI in modern processes raises complex ethical, legal & practical considerations, says CJI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modern processes, including court proceedings, raises complex ethical, legal and practical considerations that demand a thorough examination, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said on Saturday. The CJI said AI represents the «next frontier of innovation» and its use in court adjudication presents both opportunities and challenges that warrant nuanced deliberation. Justice Chandrachud said while AI presents unprecedented opportunities, it also raises complex challenges, particularly concerning ethics, accountability and bias and addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from stakeholders worldwide, transcending geographical and institutional boundaries. He was speaking at a two-day conference on technology and dialogue between the Supreme Courts of India and Singapore.

Sandeshkhali: Spot inquiry points to 'violation' of human rights, says NHRC
Sandeshkhali case in West Bengal, the NHRC has flagged «several instances of atrocities», saying it indicates that there was a «violation of human rights» due to «negligence» in the prevention of such incidents. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in its report, also observed that the «pervasive fear of reprisal, coupled with the power dynamics at play, acted as a formidable barrier», preventing individuals from voicing their grievances. The rights panel has made several recommendations and sought an action taken report (ATR) within eight weeks on each of the recommendations made therein from the government of West Bengal, the NHRC said in a statement on Saturday. «The Commission's spot inquiry has revealed several instances of atrocities inflicted upon the victims, which clearly demonstrate, prima facie, that there was a violation of human rights due to negligence in the prevention of such violation or abatement thereof by the public servant,» it said.
