WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court for years has been making it more challenging for prosecutors to bring corruption cases against public officials, guided by the belief that some of the dealmaking and fundraising in the political realm is unseemly but not illegal. A new batch of cases making their way through the courts shows that where to draw the line remains in flux. In New York, a U.S.

SC refuses plea for voting facilities to 18,000 internally-displaced in Manipur polls
Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea seeking voting facilities for around 18,000 people displaced internally due to the ethnic strife in Manipur for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The polling for the two Lok Sabha seats of Manipur will be held in two phases on April 19 and 26. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said interference of this court, particularly at this belated stage, would cause substantial impediments in the conduct of the ensuing general elections of the Lok Sabha for Manipur. «You have come at the last minute. At this stage, what can be virtually done? We cannot interfere at this stage,» the bench said.

Supreme Court seeks ED's response by April 24 on Arvind Kejriwal's arrest plea
Has ECI taken the colour off India’s poll campaigns? The Delhi High Court had upheld the arrest of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader on April 9, arguing that the investigative agency was with "little option" after he skipped repeated summonses and refused to join the investigation. Kejriwal while approaching the Supreme Court on April 11, contended in the appeal that his arrest was "motivated by extraneous considerations." The High Court had said that Kejriwal's absence from nine ED summons over six months undermined any claims of special privilege as Chief Minister, suggesting his arrest was an inevitable consequence of his non-cooperation.

Plea in SC seeks review of verdict scrapping electoral bonds scheme
Supreme Court seeking review of its February 15 verdict, which had scrapped the Modi government's electoral bonds scheme of anonymous political funding. The review plea filed by advocate Mathews J. Nedumpara submitted that this Court entertained the petition (against the scheme) and struck down the law and the scheme without noticing that in doing so it is acting as an appellate authority over Parliament, substituting its wisdom on a matter which falls in the exclusive province of legislative and executive policy. «The court failed to notice that even assuming the issue is justiciable, the petitioners therein having not claimed any specific legal injury exclusive to them, their petition could not have been decided as if a private litigation for the enforcement of rights which are specific and exclusive to them,» Nedumpara submitted in his plea. He said the Court failed to notice that the public opinion could be sharply divided and the majority of the people of this country could probably be in support of the scheme, brought into existence by their elected representatives and that they too have a right to be heard, as much as the PIL/writ petitioners.

21 retired SC, HC judges write to CJI against attempts to 'undermine' judiciary
Supreme Court and high courts penned a letter to the Chief Justice of India, expressing deep concerns over what they perceive as mounting efforts to erode the credibility and independence of the judiciary. In their missive, the retired justices address the «escalating attempts by certain factions to undermine the judiciary through calculated pressure, misinformation, and public disparagement,» highlighting the gravity of the situation at hand. «These critics are motivated by narrow political interests and personal gains and are striving to erode public confidence in the judicial system,» they said. Though the retired judges, including four from the Supreme Court, did not specify the incidents which prompted them to write to the CJI, their letter came amid a war of words between the ruling BJP and opposition parties over the actions against some opposition leaders in corruption cases.

RP sets date for second bidding for KSK Mahanadi resolution
resolution professional (RP) for the KSK Mahanadi Power has set April 26 as the date for fresh expressions of interest (EoI) to take over the 1800 MW power plant in a second round of bidding after plans by creditors Power Finance Corp (PFC) and Rural Electrification Corp (REC) to take over the company did not receive government approval. In a regulatory Form G which sets out the timeline for resolution, RP Suresh Binani has set June 18 as the final date for bidders to give a plan. The company owes creditors ₹32,240 crore out of which more than ₹29,000 crore is owed to financial creditors according to the latest list of creditors updated earlier this month. The Chhattisgarh-based power producer is a rare operational plant of its size available for a takeover in the country. As a result a half a dozen asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) have accumulated the debt from banks in the hope of finding good value from buyers. Out of the six units of 600 MW coal-based plant planned, three units of 600 MW are operational totalling 1800 MW.
