Mumbai will face double property tax if they fail to display signboards in Marathi or Devanagari script. This was announced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today. The BMC further stated that it will revoke the licenses of illuminated boards lacking Marathi or Devanagari lettering, with license renewal costs ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh. This enforcement aligns with the Supreme Court's directive and the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Rules. The BMC's decision was approved during a review meeting chaired by BMC commissioner-cum-administrator Bhushan Gagrani in view of the compliance deadline set by the Supreme Court earlier.

The court of Special Judge Kaveri Baweja heard the submissions made by the counsel appearing for Kavitha and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). During the hearing, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, who appeared for Kavitha claimed that the perspective of a mother is not substitutable by father, sister or brother. «The woman accused in this case has a child whose exams are admittedly in these months, going onto April. It's not that the child is in arms or is toddler. He is 16 years old. The issue is different. It's the moral and emotional support of the mother,» said Singhvi during the court hearing.

Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to increase the scope of theIncome Tax Department in filing of appeal cases in tribunals and courts. It has been directed by CBDT via a circular dated March 15, 2024, that the tax department can now file appeals with income tax tribunals and courts without considering the tax effect amount for certain specified cases based on the merit of the case. Among the specified cases, one is about penny stocks which falls under the category of cases involving organised tax evasion including cases of bogus capital gain/loss through penny stocks and cases of accommodation entries. «Monetary limits given with regard to filing appeal/SLP shall be applicable to all cases including those relating to TDS/TCS under the Act with the following exceptions where the decision to appeal/file SLP shall be taken on merits, without regard to the tax effect and the monetary limits,» said CBDT in its circular dated March 15, 2024.
