New Zealand captain Kane Williamson fractures thumb, but won’t go home
Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the team's immediate World Cup matches with a fractured thumb, but head coach Gary Stead is optimistic the batter will be back in action at some stage of the tournament. After spending nearly seven months on the sidelines with a knee injury, Williamson made 78 not out in his return to action in the team's comprehensive victory against Bangladesh on Friday. The 33-year-old, however, was struck by a throw while running between the wickets during the match, which now makes him uncertain for the tournament. Tom Blundell will travel to India as cover, but Williamson will remain with the team with the hope of being available for the back end of group play next month, New Zealand Cricket said in a statement on Saturday. «Firstly, we're all feeling for Kane to have this occur after all his hard work to return from his knee injury,» Stead said. «While it's disappointing news, the initial diagnosis has given us some optimism he can still feature later in the pool play following a period of rest and rehabilitation. »Kane is clearly a massive part of our side and a world class player and captain — so we'll look to give him every opportunity we can to return in the tournament." Blundell was picked ahead of Henry Nicholls, who suffered a mild side-strain during a Plunket Shield warm-up match the week. «Tom's been with the one-day side on tours to Pakistan and Bangladesh and performed well,» Stead said. «He covers multiple positions in the batting order and his wicket-keeping skills are also an added bonus as a back-up.» The 2019 runners-up have kicked off their campaign for a maiden World Cup title with a hat-trick of victories.

Neighbours first: India resumes ferry service to Sri Lanka after more than four decades
Sri Lanka restarted a ferry service between Nagappatinam in Tamil Nadu and Kankesanthurai (KKS) near Jaffna on Saturday—nearly four decades after it was suspended--as part of efforts to put in place connectivity initiatives that would push South Asian integration. A vessel named ‘Cheriyapani’ left Nagappatinam for Kankesanthurai with 50 passengers and was scheduled to return by evening with passengers from Sri Lanka. The ferry service initiative was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesignhe during the latter’s visit to India in July. The high-speed ferry, operated by the Shipping Corporation of India, has a capacity of 150 passengers. It can cover the distance of about 60 nm (110 Km) between Nagapattinam and KKS in about three and a half hours under good weather conditions, officials said. Ferry services between India and Sri Lanka were suspended in the 1980s for security reasons.

World Cup: India 8-0 Pakistan
And, it was quite fitting that the man who did the most serious damage was one who has an allergy to hyperbole. Jasprit Bumrah sends down thunderbolts, laser-guided heat-seeking ones, but always with a smile. Bumrah is the one player in the world who rarely gets agitated on the field, and he’s such a sensitive character that he sometimes flinches when expletives are used in charged-up team meetings. But, don’t mistake that soft exterior for weakness.

France raises alert level to highest after teacher killed in Islamist attack
France city of Arras on Friday that President Emmanuel Macron condemned as «barbaric Islamic terrorism.» Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said France was now on its highest state of alert and that the Arras attack bore a link to events in the Middle East, where Israel is conducting a military offensive to root out Hamas fighters after their deadly rampage. Only a day earlier, Macron had urged the French to remain united and refrain from bringing the Israel-Hamas conflict home. Visiting the site of the attack, Macron paid his respects to the dead teacher, whose body still lay under a cover surrounded by a pool of blood. "(He) stepped in and undoubtedly saved a lot of lives himself," Macron said. «Our choice is made not to give in to terror, not to let anything divide us.» The suspect, who has been arrested, was a former student of the Lycee Gambetta high school where the attack happened, a police source said.
