BJP's allies, TDP & Jana Sena, seek rollback of GST on life, health cover
TDP) and Jana Sena Party — have demanded a rollback of the goods and services tax (GST) levied on health and life insurance and handlooms. The demand was raised by BJP's two allies during the discussion in the Lok Sabha on the Budget. Speaking on the budget, TDP's Narasaraopet MP, Lavu Srikrishna Devarayalu, demanded that long-term capital gains tax be reduced and indexation be brought back. «A lot of members have raised a point with regard to the reduction in long-term capital gains tax from 20% to 12%. They also mentioned about indexation… There is also a lot of talk outside. So, I hope the finance minister will look into it. There should be a relook at indexation because middle-class people think that real estate is one thing that they can safely invest in. We feel that it should be protected» Devarayalu also made a strong case for the rollback of GST on health and life insurance. «There is 18% GST on health insurance policies. „If 75% people have life insurance, only 25% of them will have health or medical insurance. These are uneven numbers. It should be the opposite way. More people should have health or medical insurance and less people should have life insurance or the number should be equal, at least. But somehow it is skewed in one direction. It can be addressed only if GST is reduced so that more people can have access to health insurance,“ said Devarayalu.

Demand for removal of 18% GST on life, health insurance reaches Parliament: Will govt withdraw this burden on common man now?
GST of 18% on life or health insurance policies pinches policyholders and discourages citizens from taking a new or higher insurance cover. The pain of policyholders gets amplified as insurance is a product where most beneficiaries will get the benefit only when they face an eventuality like death or hospitalisation. What this means is that in some cases, they would pay the premium and high tax but not get the benefit. While the insurance industry has been raising its voice against this, the issue of 18% goods and services tax (GST) on life and health insurance premiums has again come to the forefront now. The political parties of the INDIA bloc have recently protested the high tax outside the Parliament building and demanded that the central government withdraw this GST. At least one person in the government has also aired similar views. A few days ago, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari wrote to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urging her to roll back the 18% GST on such financial products. After Gadkari's letter, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also urged Sitharaman to remove GST on insurance premiums. So will the central government remove the 18% GST and bring down your life and health insurance premium? As the Centre looks into the issue, let us understand why everyone wants the government to remove GST from insurance premiums and how it can lower your insurance premiums.

If insurance company makes late payment, penalty of 12 percent will be imposed: Shivraj Chouhan
Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, announced that under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), a penalty of 12 per cent will be imposed on insurance companies if the claimed payment gets delayed, which will be directly deposited into the farmers' accounts. According to a press release by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, he identified state government delays in releasing premium amounts as the primary cause of payment delays and urged prompt action. The central government will release its share immediately to prevent further delays, with payments being made directly to farmers' accounts from the Kharif season onward. Chouhan attributed the bulk of payment delays to issues such as delayed release of premium amounts by state governments and disputes between insurers and state authorities.

Banks' profits healthy, but margins may shrink and deposits could disappoint
stress in unsecured retail, micro finance and some rural advances as seasonal impact of the heatwave, election season slowdown and higher risk weights led to increase in slippages during the first quarter. However, analysts do not expect asset quality to be a challenge yet. Instead, most observers believe that Indian lenders will have to contend with falling margins and slow deposit growth this year. Data from the results of 40 listed banks analysed by ET showed that though net profit increased a healthy 21%, margins continued to be weak and deposit growth still lagged credit demand. There was a notable increase in stress in some micro finance and personal loan accounts. State Bank of India's fresh slippages increased to ₹7,903 crore in June 2024 from ₹7,659 crore a year ago and was double the ₹3,867 crore reported in March 2024 mainly as ₹3,000 crore of loans to individuals slipped during the quarter and was the largest chunk of fresh slippages, followed by ₹2,500 crore of agriculture loans. Chairman Dinesh Khara attributed the slippages to some delay in salaries by some state governments during the quarter.

Government to amend Wakf law to usher in more transparency, gender diversity
government is all set to bring a Bill in Parliament to amend the 1995 law governing Waqf boards to ensure more accountability and transparency in their functioning and mandatory inclusion of women in these bodies, sources said. They claimed that the move comes in the backdrop of demands from within the Muslim community. The Bill to amend the Wakf Act, 1995, will make it mandatory for Waqf boards to register their properties with district collectors to ensure their actual valuation. There are 30 Waqf boards in the country. The sources on Sunday pointed out that the revenue generated by all Waqf properties is estimated at Rs 200 crore per annum. This is not in sync with the number of properties such bodies have, they said.
