A $1 trillion time bomb is ticking in America's housing market
Years ahead of the financial crisis, David Burt saw trouble brewing in subprime mortgages and started betting on a crisis, winning himself a cameo in The Big Short by Michael Lewis in addition to lots of money. Now Burt runs DeltaTerra Capital, a research firm he founded to warn investors about the next housing crisis. This one will be caused by climate change. In a webinar with journalists last month, Burt argued that US homeowners’ wildfire and flood risks are underinsured by $28.7 billion a year. As a result, more than 17 million homes, representing nearly 19% of total US home value, are at risk of suffering what could total $1.2 trillion in value destruction.

Delhi govt to upgrade geospatial database on land records with high-resolution drone surveys
Delhi government extensively mapped the city's utilities, creating a geospatial database that included both two-and three-dimensional information on underground and overground assets. Recently, the government has decided to modernise this infrastructure to provide more accurate data and integrated services using the latest technologies, reported The Times of India. This initiative will start with a pilot project covering Mehrauli, Masoodpur, and Rangpuri villages using high-resolution drone surveys. The original database operational since over a decade includes comprehensive spatial datasets covering drains, sewers, water pipes, power lines, buildings, and transport networks, among other utilities. This database was accessible over the web and widely used by various departments and stakeholders to solve planning issues ranging from bus routes to drainage and preventive health campaigns.

All aboard for the Western Ghats
chai and coffee, churmuri, dal vada, bhajiyas and sundry other snacks hawk their wares in shrill tones, tantalising aromas wafting from their baskets. I try to block out as much as I can with Bob Dylan and Bryan Adams in my ears. As if pushed by an unseen hand, the vendors disappear.

EU suggestion on India’s carbon tax will not help local companies: GTRI
GTRI) Wednesday suggested India to use a twin strategy of a calibrated retaliation mechanism (CRM) to retaliate in equal measure and renaming some ongoing schemes as carbon taxes to deal with the EU’s climate taxes. It said that the EU’s suggestion that India could avoid its carbon tax by imposing a similar levy locally, will not help the domestic players much, as they would still be liable for the duty for their exports to the bloc.

Government funnels almost £45bn to Bank of England to cover losses
According to the BoE's annual report published yesterday (30 July), the near £45bn of funds funnelled from the Treasury to the BoE was part of an indemnity agreement, whereby any gains or losses accrued by the bank's asset purchasing facility (APF) – which carried out its quantitative easing (QE) programme – are covered by the Treasury rather than the BoE. Since the APF's inception in 2012, capital has been transferred to the Treasury rather than from it; until July 2022 cash flows totalling £123.8bn had only ever been in one direction, from the APF into the Treasury.
